THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED! Visit this post for codes for discounts on your purchase!
I have a lot of New Year's resolutions and I bet you do too, but right now I'm huddled in my house against the cold, hoping I can get some dough rising next to the wood stove, so I can turn on the oven!
But let's talk about the book, shall we — and the giveaway! The Summa Domestica: Order and Wonder in Family Life is now quite available at Sophia, even if it's still not in stock at Amazon; but maybe this is providential. I mean, I know the people at Sophia personally! They have all worked really hard to bring this set of books to life. There's no question that ordering directly from them (or buying at a bookstore) helps their company thrive.
Anyway, I wanted to show you some of the features. For one thing, it is so beautifully designed! The stock photos actually don't do it justice, not at all! The colors are richer. I had an excruciatingly specific vision in mind for the colors (as the designer will attest, poor thing), and they nailed it — but I don't think it comes through in the photos on the site, whereas in person it does. Deirdre did a whole passel of charming and inspiring drawings to complement the text. And the quality of the printing is so high.
Did you realize that each volume has a ribbon? This was a surprise to me! Ribbons are to books what pockets are to skirts, I think!
Did you know that there is an index in each volume?
I don't know if you remember, back in the day, when I was asking whether it should be one big tome or three volumes; one factor that was often mentioned was, “Make it so we can read it while we are nursing the baby!” So three volumes it is, and each one opens so nicely (I just can't stand it when a book is trying to close itself.)
I have poured out just about all everything I know into these books. And today Sophia is allowing me to give away a copy to two lucky readers! Just leave a comment here below and you will be entered to win one! (To win you must have a US address for shipping.)
bits & pieces
- You can still bless your home if you haven't had a chance up until now. Rosie shared this blessing, so moving, with this prayer:
O God, make the door of this house wide enough to receive all who need charity and companionship, narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride, and strife. Make its threshold smooth enough to be no stumbling block to children, nor to straying feet, but rugged and strong enough to turn back the Tempter’s power.
O God, make the door of this house the gateway to Thy eternal Kingdom, I ask these things in the Holy Name of Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Our Lord, Amen
See if you can procure some blessed chalk and Epiphany holy water from your church (if not, try the nearest Traditional Latin Mass church or Eastern rite one). As the linked guide says, the father of the house chalks the lintel of each doorway with these marks: 20 + C + B + M + 22.
- Let's recover the kind of education that can resonate with and at least strive for the level of that of C. S. Lewis and his best and most perceptive explicator, Michael Ward! An education that tucks Dickens, Chaucer, medieval astronomy, and Herodotus in its corners, to be savored at the right time. Well, anyway, I'm not very well educated, but I found Ward's essay on names in Prince Caspian, Return to Planet Narnia, exciting and mind-expanding.
- As I say in my post about whether having babies is a problem, one of the biggest dupes in history is everyone acting like contraception works and is not harmful — that it is a sort of magical remedy (for what? for being a normal person with a healthy body?) that some people unaccountably oppose, against all reason, because they are superstitious religious fanatics. I try to point out as often as I can that the types of birth control that work (although they do not by any means always work) endanger women who use them and are often fatal to the babies that come about anyway. Here is a site that seems really useful to provide information about IUDs and their threats. (Personally, I cannot imagine the decision-making process that goes into inserting a metal object into your body indefinitely, for the purpose of releasing said metal into your system. Sometimes I think people have lost their minds.)
- If you are interested in the case before the Supreme Court on vaccine mandates, please read this article on the 1905 case that will be most referenced, Jacobson v. Massachusetts. The author, Gerard Bradley, is Justice Amy Coney Barrett's mentor from Notre Dame. (I recently wrote about her shaky jurisprudence on the matter of mandates in another case here.) Prof. Bradley makes a strong case for rejecting the “Jacobson test,” reflexively referenced by those who have really not examined it in light of our current situation. It's a long but informative article and I recommend it.
- I was thrilled to see my friend Pascal's Instagram discussed in this article — she helps people find childhood books they've lost even the names of, and NPR took notice!
- Our Lady as doula and Patroness of Doulas! (Don't miss Pope Pius XII's moving and deep Allocution [Address] to Midwives!)
from the archives
- You know by now that I'm going to say that the most important resolutions are to get dinner under control and to sort out the laundry! I have some extra thoughts about laundry embedded in the posts in the form of what I call worksheets — a lot of words that I had decided to put into documents so that my posts wouldn't be too long. Over the years those documents' URL sharing gets mixed up, but I've gone back and fixed them, so click away. Good news — all of that is now incorporated in Volume 3 of The Summa Domestica!

I would love to win a set! I foolishly ordered on Amazon because it was cheaper and money seems to be getting tighter by the second. I’ve since cancelled the order and will be waiting until Sophia has its next sale to order directly from them. My husband and I are trying really hard now to support the smaller companies (especially Catholic ones) when we can and when it’s not absolutely cost prohibitive. Thank you for all you do! By the grace of God, I discovered your blog right at the start of my motherhood journey and it has been the biggest blessing in our family life. Merry Christmas!

Ah, It’s a Wonderful Life! We watched it colorized for the first time this year; I can’t recommend it, but I’m glad we did it once just to realize how much we like it in the original black and white. 🙂
Also, I recently read The 25th: New and Collected Christmas Essays by Joshua Gibbs, and his thoughts on Capra’s classic are spot-on. That particular essay was first featured on the Circe Institute blog: https://www.circeinstitute.org/blog/defense-george-bailey

The dangers of IUD are so true. My mom was very young when she got pregnant with me (18 when I was born and her out of wedlock). The doctors encouraged her to get an IUD while she was still in the hospital. Which she did. She was permanently damaged from it and NEVER able to have more children. There she was, a scared 18 year old, making a decision (without complete informed consent), that changed her (and my!) life forever.
I have waited for so long for your book and am just so delighted with it! I have my own copy but would love to win another copy to give as a gift. I have several newly married couples in mind!

Btw I have a “great” IUD story: I was talking to a mom at the park once. She had already has 2 children and gotten the implant. And she still got pregnant again! And her poor baby had to share the womb with this obnoxious metal interloper! The doctors warned her there might be complications, possibly even death. Thank God everyone turned out okay but you better believe she didn’t get another IUD!
Moira says
Thank you Auntie Leila for putting together these books (and Deidre!!) This is such an answer to prayer! Your writing on various topics is so meaningful. I would like to receive the Summa Domestica volumes. I was a SAHM in an era when there were some people who thought educated people should not “waste” their time at home. Sometimes I felt as if I were all alone in my husband’s & my decision.

I’ve learned so much from your blog! I’m sure the book set is a wonderful treasure trove as well!
Abby says
I don’t need a copy, as my husband bought it for me as a Christmas gift! Sophia Press did an amazing job of getting it here quickly – I think it was here the very day after it was released. And yes, it is so beautiful! The colors are way richer than show in photos, and I also love the ribbons – my daughter even commented “ooh, your book has placemarkers!” which to her is a real sign of quality.
Thank you for the kick in the pants that I needed to stop interiorly whining about getting meals on the table and the laundry done. I’ve been moderately good at doing these things… meal planning in advance and always keeping the laundry washed, if not folded, but a little inward voice definitely would whine when mealtime rolled around, as though someone else really *ought* to be taking care of this onerous task. So my new year’s resolution is to realize that my JOB is the care of the house and the people in it, and to not whine about these things, even on the inside. I think also your books clarified for me that is valuable to have someone *keep the home*. Not just raise the kids – as a homeschooler, I am fairly clear on the value of what I am doing with my kids – but to realize that there is a real value in the tasks of keeping the home as well. As you pointed out, the kids pass along through the home but the home is still there. Somehow that has felt.. selfish, or wordly to me in some way, to focus so much on a physical environment, but you helped me to see that the physical influences the spiritual either positively or negatively. Thanks for freeing me up to not feel guilty about putting effort into making our house comely and comfortable!

Erin Rush says
These are lovely books! Congratulations on seeing them to fruition! Thank you.
Anna says
Thank you, Leila! I do think it would be much more fun and beneficial to order from Sophia. I’m going to suggest to him that we consider the difference to be part of our “giving” money, as it would be wonderful to support their business. Just last night he pointed out the merit and efficacy of “voting with our dollars”. Anyway, congratulations, and I’m so glad it is a beautiful success! I thank God for your wisdom and like everyone else here, am thrilled about these books! I’m so glad you wrote them. The set being of heirloom quality is in the spirit of this blog–passing down the collective memory.
Anna says
Oops! I had deleted a preceding redundant sentence before the one with “him” that said “my husband”.
Kristin says
The books look beautiful. I’m so excited to have all your wisdom in a book!
Kristi says
I would love to win a set of these lovely books. My husband pre-ordered from Amazon for me for Christmas, but as others have said, they never arrived. I have supported Sophia Press directly with many purchases, but he is used to ordering from Amazon so I didn’t want to make a fuss after the fact. The weird thing is that Amazon never seemed to get any in stock at all, judging by the comments. So I wonder how Sophia has them in stock … isn’t it the publisher’s responsibility to see that third parties like Amazon receive stock of their books?
Frances says
I’ll keep hinting to my husband that Leila Lawler has a new set of books out…but in case he doesn’t catch on, I’m putting my name in the hat here too. Thank you!
mirhavensanctuary says
Would love to receive copies of your beautiful life’s work! The covers, illustrations and layout are all so appealing! Just a thought ~ Might it be possible to make copies available individually, perhaps at $25 per volume for more affordable gift giving? Those with single or fixed incomes might benefit from such an option.
Amy L says
Oh wow! Your blog has been so helpful to me on motherhood! I’d love to receive a copy of your wisdom all together in a beautifully bound set of books!
Marie says
I’ve always felt I did a decent job at dinner and laundry, but we’re new homeschoolers (as of last August) and about to add a fifth child to the outside world (any day), so I need more help! It would be great to win the set and skip searching online. Thanks for putting the time and effort into the project – so many women can benefit from your wisdom (I’ve lost track of how many people I’ve told about Lestoil alone…).
Colleen says

Danielle Lajoie says
Oh, Leila, they are beautiful! When my daughter came for a visit after Christmas and into the new year, she brought her copies that her husband gave to her for her early December birthday. And, yes, the colors are lovely! A ribbon to a book as pockets to a skirt, yes!! Lastly after reading a little bit, very little because I was busy with those visiting grandchildren, I found the index in the back, again, perfect! I was not going to purchase them, however, my middle daughter and I are thinking that it might be a good idea to read them now before she leaves the nest to build her own. Thank you for all that you do. I wish that you were my next door neighbor as I would have you over for a cup of tea!
Alexis says
Thank you for sharing your ideas, experiences and wisdom! What a treasure trove!

Thank you so much for the sacrifice and labor to make these books for us! I plan to order a set as soon as I have saved the money and plan to order them and the Little Oratory for wedding gifts! Thank you! You have been such a help and consolation over the years I have been following your blog! God bless you and Our Lady keep you!
Cami says
Oh, how exciting! I’ve been eyeing the set over and over again but can’t convince myself to make the purchase only because the cost (although, no doubt it’s worth it!) is a lot to spend for a low-income family. But then I consider it’s like a training/refining manual for my vocation! Might need to request it for my birthday or next Christmas. BUT please do add me to the giveaway candidates! It would be an awesome resource to win! Either way, it’s sort of comforting knowing it’s been made and it’s available. One step closer to having it in my hot, little hands! ☺️

So true!! And a million thank you’s for writing this book. Can’t wait to read it and share it with others.
Joan says
I love all the common sense things that can be gleaned here. Since common sense is not so common these days. This is where I still come whenever I need the apple crisp recipe. It’s easy, healthy, tastes good and you can freeze some to have on hand for later. Thank you for your gift of honesty and useful information.
JoanE.

Leila, What are your thoughts on keeping up the manger and Christmas decorations/tree until Candlemas? My husband I and try to live liturgically, and there is a lot of debate on whether or not it is appropriate to keep up the things mentioned above, until February 2nd. Thoughts? Thanks.
Janette says
I know I’m not Leila, but I’ll put my 2 cents in on this, if you don’t mind, since I’ve done a lot of research on the liturgical year in the past and am a bit of a liturgy nerd 😉
There are two CYCLES in the Church’s Liturgical Year: Christmas and Easter. The Christmas Cycle includes: Advent, Christmastide, and Time after Epiphany (Ordinary Time in the Novus Ordo). The Easter Cycle includes: Septuagesima (OT), Lent, Eastertide, and Time After Pentecost (OT). The Christmas SEASON/Christmastide ends on the Baptism of our Lord/old Octave Day of Epiphany on January 13th. “The Feast of Christmas *itself* lasts 12 days (“The Twelve Days of Christmas”), but the spiritual focus of Christmas doesn’t end truly until Candlemas on 2 February.”
In our home, we tend to keep the Christmas things up until at least the Baptism but have been known to longer or sometimes until Feb 2. I think it’s really a personal/family decision how long to leave things up 🙂 We keep the Nativity scene up through Candlemas.
Hope that helps!
Lisa says
Hello Janette, I don’t mind you putting in your two sense at all! Thank you. I’m aware of almost all you mentioned, it just seems every year, this subject comes up amongst Catholics and everyone has an opinion! hahaha! I appreciate your thoughts. Thank you!
Janette says
I hear you! Not sure why it’s a point of contention lol
Victoria says
I think it’s nice to do the reverse of what we do in Advent at this time of year: spend a little time each weekend putting away a few things. It feels doable and gently eases us out of the season. In our home, our tree is usually the last thing to go, and we have a lovely bonfire. 🙂
Lisa says
Hello Victoria, I like this idea as well. Since I’m not big on change, I like the idea of taking a little away at a time. I’ve been doing something similar the last couple of years, by setting up the decorations a little differently to look more wintery, starting in Jan. then Christmas like, but I’ll implement a little of what you are suggesting as well. Slowly preparing our home to be ready for the days leading to Lent.
Diana Johnston says
Thank you for the give-away!
Also, thank you for (1) making holdable volumes – the only reading I do is while nursing a baby, and even when I’m not, enormous volumes are so unpleasant to read!, and (2) making them stay-openable – I am reading a gook right now that one has to practically destroy in order to keep open, and it makes for hard reading. I can’t wait to read your wonderful books!
Tina Triplett says
Congratulations on this beautiful set of books. I appreciate that Sophia saw such value in your wisdom.

Jalaena says
I feel like I’m entering a drifting state of motherhood and home making, not sure what to do next… Like everything is in a state of, “not terrible, could be better, but requires extra work, time, and money” and I don’t know what to do about it. Other than laundry and dinner, as you say ha.
Anyway, sorry for this venting, if I’m not a lucky winner, I’ll buy anyway! Thank you for writing a book.
Morgan F says
I rediscovered this blog last year after reading for many years before marriage/kids. I can’t wait to read your Summa! I appreciated the comments you made above about contraception. My first baby is five weeks old and my third degree tear tore even more a week after birth, necessitating a second surgery for repair. Contraception has been recommended especially with how difficult my healing has been. I find it so painful that this is pushed on women. Life and the ability to bring forth that life is a gift! We should cherish that, not try to stifle our God given ability.
Clarice says
I’d love to win!

These books look so wonderful! We’ve done a LOT of renovating in our house in the last 3 months, and might be doing our kitchen at some point soon (b/c the linoleum is cracked, the dishwasher going, the stove giving out, sigh), the counters are deteriorating and on and on. Something like this would be super helpful as we navigate the best ways to organize and arrange. Also, after being a sahm for 20 years, AND expecting my 6th baby, I’ve felt a LOT of burn out of late and would LOVE to get some fresh inspiration as we go forward. Oh, and concerning the links on birth control? I couldn’t agree more. The IUD has terrible testimonials from SO many women. My hubs and I both, after baby #3 stopped wringing our hands over worrying about babies coming. We knew we would love them, so why were we so stressed at the thought? It was FAR more peaceful for us both mentally to just live, love, and if babies come, they come. Neither have I ever felt terribly comfortable with chemically altering my body OR having permanent surgery, b/c that just seems so, “MY will be done” rather than “THY will be done”, and who can we truly pray for anything else, when we can’t take our grubby little paws off of such basic elements of life? How can/could God really use us if we were so inclined to be controlling and in charge and not allow HIS will, whatever it might be? Just my two cents.
Pippajo says
It’s been so very long since I’ve left a comment—even longer since I’ve posted anything on my old, deserted blog—but I just had to today. I am departing in a few days to be with my Redheaded Snippet as she waits for the any-moment-now birth of her first baby, my first grandchild. And your book set I ordered for her arrived today, just in time for me to take it to her! She may not be aware of it yet but many of the guidelines and practices I used to train her up for keeping her own house came from your blog or email conversations we had. And now, she will have all that and more at her fingertips! Thank you, as ever, for your wisdom and willingness to share it. God bless you!
Leila says
Oh Pippajo!! It’s so good to hear from you!! And our very own Redheaded Snippet having a baby of her own!!! I’m so happy! Keep us posted!! xoxox
Leila says
And I’m so honored that you are bringing my books to her! I can’t tell you how overjoyed I am at seeing this comment!
