I'm always excited about giveaways because I love the items, but I kind of hate it too, because I want to make sure each and every commenter gets one and it hurts me that I can't do that!
But it consoles me that at least I can give you a discount code. For the books from last week (do go check them out if you missed), you can get 15% off at TAN books with THIS CODE, good until December 18:

THE GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED! USE THIS CODE TO PURCHASE FROM LOVELY LADY LINENS:
LMLD15
This week dear Thérèse at Lovey Lady Linens is offering her lovely Madonna table runner or tablecloth to a lucky winner!
So a few weeks ago we were feasting at the home of new friends and I noticed the beautiful table cloth. But when I touched it, that's when the swooning began. If you are a quilter, you understand the concept of “substrate” — the actual fabric apart from the design printed on or woven into it. You've been disappointed when pretty yardage comes out of the wash looking tired and flat; you know that thin material lacks “body” and won't hold up.
Well, these linens have body! That table cloth was so rewarding to the touch! I liken it to expecting the usual printer paper and instead finding high-quality card stock under your fingers!
So, all of that to say, worth it!
You can visit and follow Thérèse on Instagram to see all her offerings. About them, she says on her website:
Each of the curated collections you find here bears a Marian name in honor of the Blessed Mother because she is the embodiment of perfect virtue in her role as a wife and mother and no doubt, as homemaker; I tend to think that she maintained an orderly and beautiful home.
My hope is that you find an item—be it a tablecloth or a quilt —that brings a sense of joy, peace, love, and beauty into the sacred walls of your home.
Leave a comment here to be entered in our giveaway: one 112″ runner or one 60 x 90″ table cloth, for tables sitting 6-8 (you can mention which you'd prefer in your comment!).
bits & pieces
- I have two articles this week (writing articles is not my favorite thing to do but it just happened): Who Should Educate Your Children? at Catholic Answers and Can the Constitution Mandate Pregnancy and Vaccines? (a look into a line of questioning from Justice Amy Coney Barrett) at Crisis. (I don't know why all titles end up as questions; probably because I'm that controversial haha)
- As we bask in the glow of the feast of the Immaculate Conception, I offer you this short piece on John Henry Newman's view of this doctrine and reality, written when he was still a Protestant.
- The real pandemic: the loss of marriage and family in our country Only 18% Of American Households Are Families With Married Parents
- I don't think that Abigail Shrier has quite examined the depths of feminism and LGBT identity, and I would urge parents to teach their children never to lie, including never calling a “he” “she” etc (remember, the Commandment is actually not bearing false witness). But otherwise this speech to Princeton students is fantastic and should be read by or to and discussed with every teenager in America.
- Is it just my husband and me, with our journalism/book production/copyediting/general-printed-word geekery, or does everyone care about and shed actual tears over stuff like The End of an Era: A Short Film About The Last Day of Hot Metal Typesetting at The New York Times (1978)
- Oscar Peterson's interview with Dick Cavett, a “dazzling piano lesson”. For an amazing analysis of that epic performance of Boogie Blues Study (credits will be awarded towards your music theory degree, haha), do click on that last youtube video. It's worth it.
- For your budding scientist: Spiders use flight by electrostatic repulsion — they fly using electricity!

- I'm all about celebrating Advent, not Christmas, before Christmas, but I'm also all about preparation, because not sure what elves are coming on Christmas Eve to get everything done, and mamas need to pace themselves! And the whole point is that the more important an event is, the more effort we put into getting things ready! Here is a post with a craft and a link to my Pinterest board with nice crafts for your kids that result in items that would be welcomed as gifts.
- Here is a classic post from me: long, involved, not at all to the point, with stuff tacked on the end. However, if you want one Advent-worthy cookie/snack recipe (try not to burn yours like I did) and the actual list of our favorite Christmas cookies, linked to their respective recipes, this is it, this is what I've got. I am truly the worst blogger; SEO experts everywhere are falling on their swords over me.

So lovely! It’s been on my mind to begin to use more tablecloths in my home to make it even more intentionally homey. The links look very promising, as always! I read the Shrier article and thought the same thing – she hits the truth in some ways but misses the mark with the whole adult transgender/alphabet soup thing. Thank you for these weekly offerings – such a treasure!

My husband asked me for years to use tablecloths and I’ve finally started, and actually I’m really enjoying it! Beautiful linens! We would be happy to have either the tablecloth or the runner!
Julia says
Oh these linens are lovely! I recently acquired an antique table AND a dining room and have been looking to collect some quality tablecloths. However, I have experienced some trouble with using them. How does one keep them from slipping around, especially with wiggly children who pull? And how does one clean them when said wiggly children spill? I’m a novice here and would love some guidance.
Rebecca says
They make special pads to protect your table from moisture. It also helps keep the cloth in place. I forget if they are felt, flannel, etc. Does anyone else know?
Kristi says
I use a piece of white felt I got from a fabric store, and it works great.
littletherese says
Julia, when I was growing up we used a hefty, clear plastic tablecloth to cover the nice cloth underneath. I’m not sure where my parents bought it, but I’m sure Amazon or a home goods store might carry something similar. And I second Rebecca’s comment, that sounds like a good idea as well!
Jadegreen says
I used these little sticky strips for holding down carpets for a party recently. It is not the loveliest solution, but it did the job well. I wouldn’t leave the strips on a table though, it would probably get gummy and leave marks.
Sara says
These are gorgeous! Would love to have one!
Clarice Pierce says
These are beautiful. A table cloth!
Rebecca says
The linens make me think of the Little Way of Beauty:
https://www.catholiceducation.org/en/culture/beauty/the-little-way-of-beauty.html
Leila, I pre-ordered your books in late August. I am getting antsy. I cannot wait to read them!

Paige says
Beautiful linens! We would be happy with either!
Carol M Wells says
Beautiful! Bless you for using Marian names for your linens.
Abbie Mortimer says
These are so lovely and I’m glad you brought her linens to my attention! A table runner would be delightful but either are useful! What a great idea for a gift! Thank you.
M Melissa C says
Ooh, pretty tablecloths have been long on my list, especially for the proper celebration of feast days!
Kat says
How exciting! I am a military mom with a 16 month old, and to be completely transparent, I have never hosted anyone in our little apartment home yet! Moving around the county often makes it tricky to have a proper dinner party sometimes! Aside from the fact that I am an aspiring hostess, I have not quite yet taken the plunge in inviting new friends into our new home… partly out of fear that I have no idea how to be a hostess and partly because I do not own a nice table cloth. A beautiful one would give me SUCH confidence— especially knowing our Blessed Mother would be at the center of our conversation and meal through these linens! Thank you for this great giveaway!
Jeannie Stirton says
Such lovely linens! I’d love to have either a tablecloth or a runner.
littletherese says
The table runner is so beautiful I had to stop and stare for a while 🙂 I can just tell it is high quality. I’m going to check her website to see what other linens she sells!

Raquel F says
I’m so happy to see beautiful items like this making a comeback in the home! I would love to win the smaller one, since we are just a wee family of three 🙂
Marta says
Such beautiful linens! I wish I had known about this shop earlier this year. I wanted to give a wedding gift of candlesticks and a tablecloth and I had a terrible time finding ANY tablecloths, let alone attractive ones. One store clerk told me, “oh, nobody uses tablecloths anymore.”
What a shame!
Jessica Bermudez says
I love the significance a simple tablecloth can carry. So beautiful & definitely heirloom worthy.

Rebecca says
I love that table runner!
As a side note I have to tell you about a story about your book.
I (like many others) have been waiting for your new book for a very long time and I was quite excited when Sophia did their black Friday sale and I asked my husband if I could buy it then, He had kept putting me off when I’d talked about it before, saying he had to think about it and look into the author and was in truth frustrating me quite a bit. I started sending him blog posts to read and trying to convince him, I was getting impatient I admit.
He finally breaks and confesses to ordering it over a month before as a Christmas present for me. I am eagerly awaiting it, though I regret spoiling his surprise (he’s still a little vexed) 😅
Kristi says
Wow, these are gorgeous. I’d love either, but especially the tablecloth. (And I hope there will be a discount code for those of us who don’t win! I love the idea of a Marian tablecloth for her feast days!)
sibyl says
So beautiful. I would LOVE the tablecloth, but the runner is also lovely.
Ann says
So lovely, especially love that they are named in honor of Our Lady. Thank you for hosting another giveaway.
I was looking forward to watching your husband’s talk the other evening for Center of the Restoration of Christian Culture, but was unable to view it. Do you know if they will be posting the recording over at the site?
Thank you!

Janelle Hieronymus says
Beautiful linens! I would love to own something like this… I recently tried a vinyl tablecloth because of the ease of wiping down with a sponge after meals but it’s just so lacking in the beauty department! Do you have any tips for removing crumbs from a cloth tablecloth after dinner and before throwing in the wash? This was the problem that eventually pushed me towards vinyl.
Leila says
Janelle, there are little crumb-roller brushes for just this purpose, and I think every family would have at least one child who would love to operate one! Maybe Santa will bring you one 😉
Failing that, I often wrap up the cloth, shake it outside, and then actually put it back on the table.
Shari Tighe says
Beautiful. I would love them for our home.
Laura says
I’d love to win one of these linens, so pretty.

Thank you Aunt Leila for sharing another resource to add beauty to our homes! I am grateful. It was her Polish grandmother’s, used often, and passed down to two generations! The linen quality is so lovely. I have many years to enjoy it with my family. I look forward to looking at more of the linens offered at this site. The ones you have featured are lovely.

Oh, so very beautiful! Thank you for the link to Therese’s Instagram account (I’m hurrying over to it) and for the chance to win one of her pieces. If I had to choose, I think I’d tap the tablecloth, but truly both are just perfection. What a wonderful giveaway!

These are beautiful! My dear husband just finished renovating our dining room (where we eat all of our meals) and I am now in the business of (slowly) acquiring different colored runners to reflect the liturgical seasons. This would be so wonderful for our table on special marian feasts! Or just whenever I feel like something fancy 🙂 so the runner is what I have my eye on, should I be so lucky as to win!
Jenna Ton says
I would love to win one of these! I’m a new mom (3 weeks postpartum) so my Advent/Christmas decorating has been…pretty minimal 🙂 Either of these would be such a lovely addition to our dining room!
Kelsey says

Auntie Leila, I have to thank you for your inspiration in “all of the things”. At our recent Well Read Moms group Auntie Leila was mentioned a couple of times and in the discussion I didn’t quite catch it until a moment later and then had a little laugh as I said “oh! I know her too!” I’ve been working on my Little Oratory and had my son use the crèche for a step to the predictable end. We’ve used table cloths more recently to call attention to the work done to make the meals for our brood and I’m improving in patience as the hot cocoa was handed to my 3 year old and promptly knocked over across the freshly laundered cloth. All this to say – you have shown me how to find the joy in the little small ordinary moments and how to use them to turn my mind and my actions into an offering to God. Thank you! Would you have any suggestions for how to reprimand my son who lost his new winter coat, didn’t realize it was lost, but was reunited with it thanks to my husband realizing it was lost and going to retrieve it? It was a St. Anthony miracle that it was still there a week later! I’m still working on ironing out my discipline style. I’m still a little too Boom and Bust for my own liking.
Leila says
Dear Blairbel, so happy you have a little oratory and are using tablecloths… I think it’s good to have some sturdy ones for every day use and with toddlers, as well as a nice wipeable table top so that you can go “au naturel” and still feel that things are pretty.
As to disciplining a 3 yo, well, it’s totally normal for them to spill, knock over nativity sets, and lose coats! The mom is responsible for remembering the coat (and the dad for running back and getting it).
There is just no way a 3 yo can have something like that on his radar. You’re lucky he didn’t leave without his shoes. I’m not kidding — a sweet ELEVEN-you girl left her shoes at my house recently! Like not in hot weather at all!
Parents need the mental checklist. No more sailing off without first looking around, taking stock, and noting what you came in with (so also taking stock as you go in!).
I would gently encourage you not to put grown-up burdens on a toddler. Why, even grown-ups forget their coats! There is so much to look at and wonder about and run up and over…
Courtney says
Oh yes the 3 year olds (twins) are not expected to manage their coats. It was their 9 year old brother that had lost his coat and was fortunately reunited with it St. Anthony was working overtime for us!
Leila says
Oh wow twins! You have a lot of coats to look after!
