The weekly “little of this, little of that” feature from Like Mother, Like Daughter!
Happy Independence Day weekend, everyone! We hope your 4th of July was not as rainy as ours. It didn't feel very… patriotic. But we enjoyed ourselves nonetheless. The sun is back this morning!
I for one was so relaxed and in the spirit of the holiday that I completely forgot about {b&p} until this morning! (Usually I'm compiling all week and I put it together on Fridays – or at least get it started!) So the links aren't very numerous – but they are worth your while.
- If you are not Catholic, and maybe even if you are, you might range from bemused to outright scandalized by the idea of someone going to visit? or do? you are not even sure what to a vial of someone's blood. You don't get it. Relics. Weird, huh? Well, read this piece by our friend Dwight Duncan to get a glimmering of what being a saint might actually mean in this “Christ-haunted” and strangely earthy world of ours. (If you are viewing in Chrome you might get a security warning, but the site is actually safe.)
- Treasure Island as the perfect book for summer, by William Fahey.
- And Walker Percy's Lost in the Cosmos as living up to its subtitle: The Last Self-Help Book. (No, Peter Lawler is not a relation, although he sometimes feels like one for the number of times the question comes up!)
- The Cheese Nun! A certain Benedictine, Sister Noella, and her adventures in cheese-making. One of a proud tradition of dedicated religious who love science and contribute mightily to its archives!
- Are the neighborhood kids getting out to play? Nothing says summer like children romping freely. Check out these amazing photos of children playing, around the world. I think Ghana may be my favorite — those kids know how to have a good time.

Those photos of children playing around the world are stunning. My favorite thing about all of them is the use of non conventional (to me anyway) items for entertainment. Not a play station in sight 🙂 I think my favorite might be Ghana as well. Thanks for sharing that link.

The security warning is because the web address starts with https:// and it’s not a secure website. If you delete the s out of the address, so it’s just http:// , the website will load without the error message.
