This one tickled Nick's fancy, so I snapped it speeding by in a cab:
“Aggressive Construction” — that really is what it's like in that city. (And aggressive is Nick's favorite word.)
And yes, those are bamboo scaffoldings you see everywhere. Apparently bamboo is stronger than our steel for this purpose, but it's mind-boggling to see glass, steel, and concrete high rises appliqued with bamboo. Sometimes whole buildings the size of city blocks are completely draped, all around.
Are they going to tear them down? It's so… aggressive.
The view from nearly the top of the ICC building, one of the tallest in the world, on a smoggy day (there are not many other kinds of day, unfortunately).
A Sunday excursion to see the islands:
I'm contemplating my knitting after a swim, and wondering if I can do it while the boat rocks. Natasha has a stronger stomach than I.
On one side a sweet cove for swimming — on the other, a container ship headed out to sea.
But the best sight of all, Francis!

In a world with so much bad news in it I am delighted to see such a happy thing as your family. Here's the headline: Lovely extended family visit darling new grandchild in faraway exotic, fun place! This is the best news I've heard in a long time. Your son and his sweet family are so refreshing to see. Thanks for posting more about it!

That picture of Phil and Francis is perfect 🙂 Also, Pippo and Francis sure do look like cousins!

Loved the pictures! I don't wish to alarm you, but I would warn Nick and Natasha against swimming in the South China Sea; my sister did when she lived in Hong Kong before the handover, and the chemical burns she got as a result are still with her, over a decade later. “Pollutied” doesn't even begin to describe the state of the air and the water, alas…

amazing photos of a different world – thank you!
But was most blown away by the last photo, which should be simply titled, 'A Grandfather'.

If they'd like a way for the women to sell their knitting and crochet, you might consider contacting Trades of Hope. It's a fairly new company, selling handcrafts from all over the world to support artisans from third world countries. May be worth looking into.

Wonderful photos of the city and water. I like the concept of teaching the women to knit and crochet. It's my hope I can do that in a Kenyan village one day too. Your grandchild is so precious.

Oh the memories! I lived in Hong Kong long ago and wanted to stay forever. I still miss it! How wonderful that you were able to visit your grandbaby so far from home! 🙂

Husband and I are planning on moving to Hong Kong (before we move then to Barcelona, and then to London, and then retire in Cornwall — we have high hopes). I'd love to have some tips on how she deals with the small space of the apartments.

I remember my first visit to Hong Kong when I was in the sixth grade. (ages and ages ago)

My husband collects funny signs from asia.
