Thanks to Ginny for the Yarn-Along!
This is one of those little skeins I got on sale last month. I must say this 110 m. is giving me a headache.
Well, not the yarn, which is fabulous, but the patterns. After a couple of searches on Ravelry I started one for pretty lacy fingerless mittens and quickly realized that I had no idea how to make it work.
Then I started another. Weird. Then a third. I've already made a lot of mistakes because this particular pattern has you YO and then quickly SSK, which means that the YO is constantly in danger of not YO-ing at all, leaving you (after a row of K, of course) with too few stitches. I've resigned myself to tossing in random stitches to make up for it, and they can't be near SSK either, because then then the SSK won't work. But that's where you realize it….
Sorry, non-knitters. That is opaque. Even to me.
And I pulled out my lovely Betty Crocker's Kitchen Gardens book. Tasha Tudor just makes you feel happy. How comforting it is, how simple, unlike that The New Victory Garden one which makes you feel like a loser from the get-go. (They are both booksale finds from way back.) Although it does have useful information, I suppose. I like how it's organized by month, and that garden is fairly near us, so the months really do match up.
I wish I could knit and garden at the same time! (For that matter, I wish I could garden, period. It's like January out there.) (Seriously, there's a fire in the wood stove.)
Blog housekeeping alert:
Tomorrow we will have {pretty, happy, funny, real} ~ Holy Week Edition! I was blown away by all your contributions and wonderful photos. Go to the first post to know what it's about — the context of contentment in everyday life!
So take your pictures and get ready to share!
Some people had a little trouble with the button last week, although many of you got it going, which was a relief to anyone over here who, when it comes to HTML, is like that tourist with the phrasebook who will ask the natives where the potatoes are when all she wants is to go to the bathroom.
The nice thing about the button is that it's its own link! Once you get it in there, it's “live” — anyone who clicks on it will be brought to our blog, so you don't have to go through writing out the name of our blog and then adding the link every time. If you put the button on your post, you've linked!
So first, make sure you have copied ALL the code in that box. Only a little is showing, but there's actually a bunch there.
Copy it by left-clicking on the box with the code until the whole thing is selected, then right-click copy, then go to your own blog and right-click paste.
If your blog is a Blogger blog, look at this:
You want to be in “Edit HTML” when you paste your code on your own post. That's because the code is HTML!! If you put it in “Compose” it will just be a string of code.
But if you do what I say, when you click on that “Compose” tab you will magically see the picture!
If this is still unclear, it may be because you are using the old editor on Blogger. You will be much happier for other reasons if you go into your Settings place, scroll down, and change over to the Updated editor.
If you have some other blogging platform, sorry, I have no clue. Just keep in mind that there must be a spot for you to enter HTML code.
Some of you were kind enough to put the button on your sidebar. It's a little big and it might hang over a bit. Would you like a smaller button? Use this one:
One more thing: I found out that if I label my post {pretty, happy, funny, real} I get four categories in my labels! That's because of the commas. Hmph. So I made it {phfr}. Just a heads up for those of you trying to be good indexers.
Okay, see you tomorrow! XOXO!

I just tried the button code again and the problem is that all of the < signs in the code have been turned into < or >. I'm using the new editor in Blogger and it only works if I manually change the code. If you change all of the < to < and all of the > sections to > then it works.
_Leila says
That's just so strange, Charlotte. When I test it, everything is fine. Maybe a native speaker can tell me what is going wrong and why the code changes!
Charlotte (Matilda) says
I know that in using Blogger, I have had times when an & symbol gets changed to something else and I just thought it was a glitch with blogger. Maybe a techie can tell us why it happens. It works for me now though, after I made the changes. Yay!
Bobbi says
I do have the updated blogger…I know about the difference between html and compose…I tried it both ways…It didn't work…so, I copied your picture and linked it.
Anna says
Yes, that was my problem, too. But! The code from your first post worked just fine, the one in the sidebar is okay, but the one on Rosie's post had all the < etc. On a good day I would have been able to translate it, but Thursday was not a Good Day. 😉
_Leila says
But, the code in Rosie's post was copied and pasted from the sidebar! Why would it change?
Why? Oh WHY?
Anna says
Technology can be so tricky!
Ha! I wonder if it was the exact problem you're describing- it was switched into text instead of staying HTML.

love that color and think it would make a lovely pair of fingerless mitts. hope you get those pesky yo, ssk to work for you!
margo says
I used {pretty happy funny real} as a label, without the commas, and it's now a category on my blog. It covers so much!
ha, I sort of followed that knitting stuff. I love when you talk about something so frankly because then I feel normal for all those projects I do where I'm muddling around and maybe don't even finish.
Erin @ Wild Whispers says
Your knitting sounds like my knitting often is. I buy yarn without care for pattern then can find nothing to make the yarn into! I wish you luck!
Barbara says
When I saw your post title, Leila, I thought you were cursing {phfr}! haha! It will take me a few weeks to get it. (I'm thick that way.) Wishing you and yours a blessed Triduum.
Judy@Learning says
No doubt there is something I don't understand, but I always do what Bobbi above says–I copy and paste. It is easy, and the button is still clickable on my blog.
Lisa G. says
I did the same as Margo – without any commas, and it's one big happy label! I also had the trouble with Rosie's button – if you look at the code – I mean, the beginning of her button's code, it's not the same as the beginning of the other one.
Barbara's comment about thinking it was a swear word is pretty funny.
And yes, Tasha Tudor definitely makes you feel happy!
Lisa G. says
The idea of a smaller button for the sidebar is a good one! But it doesn't appear – it's not available from flickr, or something.
_Leila says
I'm just having trouble with it, so — “system processing, please stand by” as they say in the self-checkout line!

a NORMAL cookbook illustrated by Tasha Tudor!!!! and I have birthday money just sitting in my amazon account…guess what I'll be getting 🙂
I agree about the Victory Garden- I grew up on the PBS show- loved it, but I never felt up to the task
