I was working on the Antique Bricks quilt because of my frustration level at my fabric never arriving, fabric I need so I can continue on my Rising Sun quilt for Rosie and Philip. Finally it came Saturday morning, so I was able to take one more baby step on the way to making a design decision.
You see, hereabouts we only have Joann's for fabric. I suppose I was very lucky to find just the right white and red for the patches…but the yellow background, oh my.
I tried sending to equilter.com for swatches, and they were indeed quite helpful in providing me with as many colors as I thought would work, one that they thought would work (after I sent them that picture {above} of what I'm trying for)……and also one that will not do at all, clearly — but that just goes to show you how hard it is to judge from the computer!
I guess it's too much to ask that a fabric store stock all the colors and fabrics there are in the universe…sigh.
But those little swatches just didn't cut it for me. So I ordered two yards each of the two most likely colors, in the hopes that I would be able to make my choice. I waited, and waited…turns out there was some kind of mistake in my order. Argh!
At last they came, and now I can see on the proper scale what it is that I am trying to do:
I can, right?
Can you? Pay the centers of the pieces no mind. I haven't completely sewn them up, and when I do the corners will match.
Here's that picture again:Ochre?
Or Mustard?
But you really have to be here in person to tell! Can you all come over? Now? Please?

I definitely vote for the ochre. If only I were a mile or two closer, I'd run over and look in person, since we're off of lessons this week 🙂 I do think that quilting will also change the appearance of the background fabric. The fairly heavy quilting in the photo makes some shadows that may darken the look. It's a tough call. Also, I just finished writing up our dinner menus for October!! Suddenly I don't feel like screaming when my kids ask me, "Mo-om! What for supper??"
NorahS says
The ochre looks best to me. The other one looks too washed out, at least on my computer. Both quilts are beautiful! I might have to try the bricks one myself.
AmyRobynne says
Another vote for ochre!

Maybe it's just the computer screen, but I have to agree with the three previous commenters: ochre! Dana Lynne
Sarah says
Ochre, definitely! It is a teensy bit brighter and will soften to the mustard color over time. Good luck! I'm just thinking about trying my hand at quilting (and did my first mini-applique sewing project last week!) so I'm inspired!Best,Sarah
TwoSquareMeals says
It's unanimous. I vote for ochre, too!
Cheryl (Copper' says
I like the ochre, too!
Leila says
Does anyone else like how the quilt matches the porch?? with the cat??I slay myself…
cmarie says
The white gets along better with the richer toned color, the contrast is more striking. Gosh that patern is sharp!
Polly says
Definitely the deeper color–first one–ochre, I think! It pops! And will look great over time and after washings.
Susan says
In case you still aren't convinced: ochre.
Shawna says
I think ochre too. I'd pop over and look, but it's a bit of a commute.
Dr. Mom says
Definitely ochre. Much richer color. It matches the picture better.
Pam says
I agree. The deeper background color adds more richness. Did you hand piece the blocks? They are beautiful.Your blog does good things for my soul. Thank you for sharing yourself.Blessings,Pam in Tennessee
MomE says
I'm feeling sorry for poor mustard but I have to agree with ochre too. It'll see bright but it'll mellow with time. If only I lived a few thousand miles closer…I surely would pop over and give it a look for ya! The antique brick quilt turned out gorgeous!
Sara says
According to my computer, the winner is Ochre. Hands down.
Leila says
Ha ha! Yes, MomE, I feel sorry for mustard too! And when I ordered everything, I was sure mustard would be the one, but just wanted to see how ochre was…but it is better, I'm thinking! But notice the pillow in that picture!! Maybe the quilt isn't as dark as it looks. You know how tricky lighting can be….And also, the antique bricks quilt isn't quite done… I wouldn't want you to think I'd forget about binding it.Don't worry, you'll see pictures of it until you are ready to throw my blog out the window.

no doubt..ochre 🙂
Bethany says
Yes, the ochre, like everyone else said!
Crafty P says
just by looking… quickly… I'd say ochre. What are your people saying? Husbands have a good sense about these things, sometimes. My Vinny gives me great scrapbooking advice whenever I ask!
Suki says
Oh my gosh, totally mustard. Not really, I like the ochre better. But I felt the need to be contrary.Crafty P–my wonderful father is color blind and crafting impaired. If he sees any difference in those two colors, I don't think he'd admit it! Sadly, he's not much help in this area!
Laura says
Ochre for me, too. The mustard definitely looks washed out to me. Not strong enough for the red! Your spirals look beautiful, by the way.
Leila says
Oh, the picture I posted of the quilt in the magazine doesn't include the pillow in question. To see another picture (with the pillow), go to this post and scroll down: http://ourmothersdaughters.blogspot.com/2009/08/s…
Mrs Cabrio says
My computer says "ochre" too! Could the mustard be used to trim the antique bricks?
Melanie B says
I'm all for the ochre too. Poor mustard, it just looks too dull. And yes I was swooning over how beautifully the white cat and red porch photos so wonderfully complemented the quilt. Even before you asked.
pip says
Unfortunatly I'm all the way over in London, England, or I'd pop round. I think ochre too though. You've inpired me to get on with my quilt, so thank you 🙂
cindy says
Definitely the Ochre — what a lovely quilt that will be. If you were using a deeper burgundy or a navy or a hunter green with the white, the mustard would work well. But I agree, with the peppermint candy red, the ochre is the one I'd opt to use.
Kari says
Well, I can't help it…ochre seems nicest to me also.Looking at the swatches, I was thinking something a bit brown/beige-er just in my taste, but seeing the brightness and contrast of the red and white against both, the mustard just looks to plain. Ochre adds some richness and depth.I feel for you in your fabric saga–it would be maddeningly frustrating to me also. {I have all the fabric for a quilt for my nephew except a little scrap of black or dark gray (patterned or not) for smoke coming out of a train….and no money to go buy a scrap. I felt sure I had some in my bits of leftovers (too small to call a stash) but alas, only girly, bright colors…nothing "smoky".}Cheers to you on your lovely quilt projects!Kari
Meredith says
Definitely the bright ochre to counterbalance the red. Won't both colors mellow over time, anyway?
Briana says
On my computer the ochre looks the best. It has a nice contrast and really makes the red and white blocks pop. Very pretty quilt. Those circles look like they were hard to piece.
Breanna says
OCHRE. :)Isn't it a more mysterious-sounding word than "mustard", anyway?

Be over in a sec… My humble choice from the photos, Ochre. Linda

Oh yes adorable-little-white kitty ties them together well… and NEVER would we 'throw your blog out the window'..never. Linda
Carrien says
ochreWhether it matches the photo or not it definitely makes the red and white look more vibrant than the other color.ps. I would love to come over and talk fabric. One more way to put off actually sewing any of mine. [grin]
Mary says
OchreIt is the richer, deeper color and will be a fabulous backdrop for the red/white circle.Good luck…
Sue says
Chiming in late, here, but I have to go with the ochre too. I really wish I could just pop on over to see them in person! I love your blog!
Dawn says
Ochre for my vote too. And I love that last quilt you showed on Saturday!
Lawler Family Stalke says
mustard!no, just kidding. ochre!!!! all the way! it's so much darker- the mustard already looks faded.xoLFS

Kari!I know just how you feel! I just finished the top of a quilt and found that when I bought the fabric I GROSSLY underestimated how much backing I would need and this month I simply can't shell out the $20 it would take the fix that 2 yard error. How does one underestimate by 2 yards?? In fact, I didn't even underestimate, I just did really bad math…Anyway, want to start a fabric swap? Not that I think you can help me with my two yard problem, but if you'll give me your address and a measurement, I think I have just the smokey grey you're looking for. It does have a little brown in it, but smoke can do that right? I just read a silly book called The Persian Pickle club and it's about a quilting group in the midwest during the depression and they did NOT go out and buy fabric (how extravagant!!) they swapped for what they needed. With so many ladies here who obviously LOVE fabric and have never met wouldn't it be fun to start a swap?
Jen says
ochre.
Mrs Bossy says
Ochre if it were for me, but what does the bride like?
Jane Anne says
I like the Ochre the best but I have to tell you – either way, it looks like it is going to be beautiful.
Stephanie Meyers says
Ochre for me too! I wish I had the quilting gift. Right now I just sew clothes and such for my girls. Some day I will have time to give it a tackle!Good luck!
Erika says
If only we had something as fancy as Joanns for fabric here…ours closed. So now, we have WalMart. Well, what's left of the fabric department after their remodel. A very sad situation–but very fortunate that I am so many years backed up on projects I still have stuff from when I lived where there were fabric stores! And yes, ochre. What a striking quilt! Really lovely.
kari says
Anne! You are so sweet! Feel free to email me at Kbrane@unm.edu and we'll start a swap. (Somehow I'm not smart enough to figure out how to email you from your comment…so I hope you read this!)I sure wish I could help you with your 2 yard needs! If you need any zebra or cheetah print fabric, or faux shearling let me know! (or small scraps and I'll go digging!)I've read the Persian Pickle Club as well and yes, it's light, but good reading none the less! Thanks for your response to my comment!Kari
April says
Honestly, I think either would work, but the ochre looks the most like the picture (at least on my screen). Can't wait to see the finished product!
