I got excited this fall when I read about sowing seeds in recycled flats outdoors on the deck. You can check it out here. Also here.
Have you ever sown seeds outside? In dead winter?
Now I'm panicking. When should I start? I'm a little concerned that wedding planning will drain my planting mojo (not that I'm anything but delighted to be planning a wedding for my darling girl), but this seems like it would be worth the effort. A frugal, simple way to get the garden going…
What do you think? Do you have any experience with this?

I have winter sown plants for 3 years now using the same sites you referenced. It is a lot of fun, but this year I am cutting back the variety of plants I sow. I need more plants of fewer variety to create drifts or mass plantings in my flower beds. I haven't growing the veggies though.

I came here via Meredith's site. I'm loving what I see and read!I'm trying Winter Sowing for the first time this year. However, I did not put plastic baggies over the pots since I didn't have them on hand. I'm going to wait until March and build a simple cold frame around the pots to keep the air warmer around them. If it works, it works; if it doesn't, at least I tried. 🙂

I have nothing to say about winter planting or whatever it is this post is about. All I know is that I came here via Merchant Ships and I'm in love with this blog!Maybe I'll even learn what winter sowing is!

First time commenter, here via MerchantShips (actually, weeks ago to your other blog because of a comment you left on gers) Have had a lot of fun reading through your posts today, and love your commonsense approach to menu planning. And your wonderful humor : )I just left Meredith a comment how your writing style reminds me of the Nester, and lo and behold, Nester just left a comment here!Especially appreciate the link to La La Rokh in Boston, as we are New Englanders and are looking for something new to do next time we go in there. deb meyers

P.S., No experience with winter planting, except for the occasional surprise popping up in my garden bed from some traveling critter dropping it's seed under the snow. We're probably the same zone?deb meyers

Meredith directed me here, and I am glad to visit! Winter sowing is really quite fun and it worked out well for us. I started in March two years ago and had about a 90% success rate – which was fantastic. The plants were hardy and produced well all summer. I didn't do it last year, but plan to this year! Have fun!

Came here via Meredith too and can't wait to read more!Last winter I planted tomatoes and basil in little peat pots just so my daughter could watch the seeds grow. I ended up transferring the seedlings to bigger pots and then eventually planting them outdoors. Both the tomatoes and basil thrived and I'm planning to do it again this year!
