The weekly “little of this, little of that” feature from Like Mother, Like Daughter!
So I think we can agree that dear Sukie may be ready to blip this baby, as we say in Lawler-land! You'll know what I'm otherwise occupied with if you don't hear from me. Here's hoping for the best, timing-wise. Pretty impressive, no? Sometimes I wonder about Providence's sense of humor!
Thanks for the prayers! (And Deirdre would like you to know that she's moving and this is her balcony, sans decorations: “Make sure they know we don't live in an alley or something!”)

- How would you apply for a job if you were Leonardo da Vinci? How about a list of accomplishments in the field of military engineering? “Also, should the need arise, I will make cannon, mortar and light ordnance of very beautiful and functional design that are quite out of the ordinary.”
- Somehow I need to convince my dear husband that something like this would be entirely his own idea. I was so excited that Ashley was re-doing a camper. To tell the truth, I am not entirely sure that I don't agree with my dear husband that trailing a trailer on an actual road (in New England vs. maybe Oklahoma) might be more than we are cut out for, but it sure is cute.
This gets me quoting from The Wind in the Willows:
‘There you are!' cried the Toad, straddling and expanding himself. There's real life for you, embodied in that little cart. The open road, the dusty highway, the heath, the common, the hedgerows, the rolling downs! Camps, villages, towns, cities! Here to-day, up and off to somewhere else to-morrow! Travel, change, interest, excitement! The whole world before you, and a horizon that's always changing! And mind! this is the very finest cart of its sort that was ever built, without any exception. Come inside and look at the arrangements. Planned 'em all myself, I did!'
The Mole was tremendously interested and excited, and followed him eagerly up the steps and into the interior of the caravan. The Rat only snorted and thrust his hands deep into his pockets, remaining where he was.
It was indeed very compact and comfortable. Little sleeping bunks–a little table that folded up against the wall–a cooking- stove, lockers, bookshelves, a bird-cage with a bird in it; and pots, pans, jugs and kettles of every size and variety.
`All complete!' said the Toad triumphantly, pulling open a locker. `You see–biscuits, potted lobster, sardines–everything you can possibly want. Soda-water here–baccy there–letter- paper, bacon, jam, cards and dominoes–you'll find,' he continued, as they descended the steps again, `you'll find that nothing what ever has been forgotten, when we make our start this afternoon.'
I'm afraid that the Chief is very much like Rat… and will take some convincing. But I need a vintage camper!!! Maybe for the backyard…
- Do personal relationships threaten the power of the state — especially if the relationship is marriage? Read Stella Morabito's answer to that important question.
- I promised in {pretty, happy, funny, real} that I would post the article that clarified a good entertaining spirit, and here it is, from good old Jeffrey Tucker. I hasten to add that I do think that Protestants and many others can throw a good party as well! The recipe, if you can call it that, for the Rhubarb Shrub is here.
- A very sweet exhortation from a widow of 56 years in the form of regrets and advice about marriage! Do read it. I feel she would be a kindred spirit, don't you?
- A moving account of a young woman whose beauty and grace were matched only by her suffering. I was struck by this passage:
“Job’s friends are present in all ages; they claim to be speaking for God, but are really the devil’s advocate, making one feel responsible for one’s suffering. It was due to their sins, some implied, to their lack of faith that Chiara and Enrico had sick children and that Chiara now had cancer. Had they shown sufficient faith, then God would have worked miracles, was their opinion. What they failed to see though is that God was working miracles all along in Chiara and Enrico’s hearts, and in those around them. A conversion of the heart is the greatest miracle on earth, compared to which walking on water is easy. God was with them on this journey, guiding their steps, not punishing them for any real or imagined faults.”
- I can't help linking to this hilarious recording of a BBC radio call-in episode, although I think you must have listened already. It's just that the cookies are so minty! And crunchy! And hearing this fellow is so very, very like trying to get your three-year old to get to the point already!
Don't forget to post your Little Oratory pictures on our dedicated link-up!
On to the giveaway:
This week we are bringing you Sarah‘s e-book about a different approach to homeschooling from what I, at least, see so often in today's hectic culture. Called Teaching from Rest: A Homeschooler's Guide to Unshakeable Peace, I think it will help many anxious moms of young children out there with practical advice for trusting in God to guide you in your efforts to educate your children.
The giveaway is for the complete set: The e-book, the Printable Journal, and the Audio Companion. Watch a trailer and take a look at the things people are saying about what Sarah has put together for you. I am sure you will find that you come to a new level of confidence once you realize the strategies necessary to stop relying on your own efforts and trust God to show you the way!

Ever seen The Long Long Trailer with Lucille Ball? Oh my…
I was struck, reading the Morabito piece, by how poor, how miserable, how narrow and utilitarian was the Slate authors’ view of human beings. And in particular, how full of hate for men some women seem to be – their bitterness and spite are barely contained.
Thank you for all the links – the widow’s letter is so moving and powerful…
Best of wishes to Sukie!!
Krista says
I’ve been wanting to read that book! I had a period of intense (for me) anxiety late last summer and, after homeschooling for years, decided to put my kids in public school. Now I’m trying to figure out what to do for the future, but the idea of going back to that anxiety makes me panic. I have a feeling her book will offer some practical guidance for me!
Jenna says
I would be delighted to win this book. We are beginning homeschooling in the fall with our oldest while meanwhile keeping things afloat with our three year old and baby.
Cristina says
I would love to win this set! I’ve been dying to read it after all the buzz but I just bought most of my curriculum for next year so it’s been placed on my “maybe next month” list 😉

I have much more to read here — loved Jeffrey Tucker’s article — but I had to say, before it goes away ;-), that is one beautiful belly, Sukie! Stunning. Prayers for a healthy delivery.
Kate says
I would love to read/hear/write that set (I cannot bring myself to use the verb “to journal” so I would not be able to “journal” but to use the journal would be lovely.) Thanks for the giveaway!
Great looking links, I’m looking forward to my quiet time this evening to read through.
Suki looks great! Many prayers and wishes for her.
Kristin says
I would love to win this book. I really like reading her blog.
Tracy says
I feel the same as you about the vintage camper. My husband is a Rat too as well. I love how you said you need to convince him it was his own idea…same machinations here at times 🙂
Mamabearjd(Michelle) says
You are so clever to leave us lots to read while you are anticipating/welcoming the baby! I’m tickled that you posted the vintage trailer bit. I have been swooning since she posted it. We tried being an rv family one summer and it was not my husband’s favorite, but I tell the kids that when they are grown I will rotate my visits to them and haul my own little trailer with me!
Tracy E. says
I would love to win! Sarah’s podcasts are wonderful!
This is also a lovely blog!

I remember walking around heavily pregnant like Sukie and I overheard a little girl asking he mother why that lady was hiding a ball under her t-shirt.
Funny, but a a bit sad too, because kids don’t see many pregnant ladies anymore.

It’s not uncommon here in the U.K if you have space (land!) to put a Shepherds hut or old Gypsy Caravan and really pretty it up as a writing shed or craft workshop. I’d love to but simply not the space!
Sara says
Sukie looks great! I was looking at that ebook last week and would love to win it!
Margaret says
I would love receiving this book! Can’t wait for baby news!

Great links this week. I’m still splotchy after reading the article about Chiara (I’m not an attractive cryer!). Being pregnant with baby #2, I was especially humbled and moved by her perspective and joy in the loss of two children.
I’d love to win the ebook. Even though homeschooling is a few years off for us, I love the idea of mothering from a place where God’s peace and rest reign in my heart.

Sukie looks adorable! I’m looking to seeing another baby on the blog!
Anne-Marie says
I think that book could be very helpful to a veteran homeschooler like me, as well.
The passage about Chiara and Enrico that you quoted reminded me of a conversation a friend of mine had with her daughter after the death from cancer of a little girl in our parish. My friend’s daughter asked, “Why didn’t God make a miracle happen? We were all praying for her to be cured!” and my friend answered, “Maybe He did make a miracle happen, but it wasn’t the one we wanted. Think of all the people who were moved to pray for her, who hadn’t prayed for a long time before that. Maybe that was the miracle.”
Liz L says
I would love to have this book. I am starting to homeschool my son this fall!
Sonya says
Love your blog! I am also very much enjoying your collaboration with Elizabeth Foss for Summer in the Oratory. As an Anglican (neither particularly high or low church) I can wholeheartedly agree that this little book is relevant for both Catholics and Protestants, or if you prefer . . . the catholic (universal) church. I’ve been debating buying Sarah’s book since it came out, so maybe I’ll win it instead!
Thanks!
Victoria says

OOOH, How I would love to win this. I could use this about every single February, when I wonder if 1. I should be homeschooling 2.I should change my curriculum (again) 3.Why I can’t get motivated (for anything…at…all) I guess If I don’t win I will just have to buy it.
Claire Michelle says
I think Sarah may have some things to say that will really help me. I’m afraid hers is one of those blogs that always makes me feel bad, not good, because she seems to excell at everything! And why is comparison such a terrible constant temptation?! After having twins, a talented type A probably has a lot of really good advice! If I win this, it will be a sign from God that I should read it 😉
Amanda says
I can’t remember which blog I stumbled upon first, LMLD or Amongst Lovely Things. That was a few years ago, but what a transformation the holy spirit has made in me since then. With the encouragement of all you wonderful women we are starting our 3rd year of homeschooling this fall. I absolutely believe these blogs were put in my path for that reason and I am ever grateful!
God Bless,
Amanda
Erin says
This series sounds great! I have been wanting to learn more about homeschooling! Please enter me in the drawing.
Susan says
What a beautiful mother, carrying that beautiful baby — God bless and protect both of you! And yes, I would love to win this book — I was too timid to home school, but God forced the matter upon us when my husband lost his job. ….what I discovered was pure joy. After putting five children through “Catholic” schools, and going into tremendous debt doing so, life unexpectedly became less stressful (a paradox, considering our income situation), and more blessed. Even after regaining employment, I continued to home school, so beautiful and wonderful was the experience. Now, I am a grandmother, and want to encourage my son and daughter-in-law to home school their sons.
