Last week reader Susan (DE) kindly asked if there would ever be another Finnabee appearance on the blog.
The short answer is yes, I can at least assure you that there will be future glimpses of my lovely, growing girl; and that my main concern is actually not so much about privacy. I'll leave it at that for now, as my thoughts on the subject are still brewing. If I were to explain myself in full right now, this post would morph from a bits & pieces to a rambling bit too much.
You are kind to ask!
We are definitely in a period of waiting this Advent! Just looking forward to Christmas and doing our best to be patient. Lots of quiet time during nursings and soup meals made from the stock that the Thanksgiving turkey yielded. Yes, my freezer was full of stock.
This week's links!
Mostly miscellaneous:
- We enjoyed this call toward manliness from Emily Stimpson: Feckless Men, Faithful Fathers, and the Masculine Genius.
- Stimpson talks about the rich theology of women that she's been studying. Speaking of which, I loved this reflection from Cardinal Dolan about A War For Women. My favorite line from the article: “It is the Church who believes that the omnipotent God of the universe awaited the free consent of woman before His plan of salvation could proceed.”
- Yes, we celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe this past week. I just love her! And I think that she must be pleased with this amazing story about The Day I Performed the First-Ever RU-486 Abortion Reversal.
- Some of us have been discussing a little bit about the question of Santa (who is he? What is his relationship to St. Nicholas? Ought he to enter into the Catholic Christmas scene? etc.) and thought that this article from Catholic Culture was helpful at least in getting some context. Our general conclusion was that traditions like these that involve an imaginative narrative certainly do best in the family context and when a healthy distance from shopping malls is maintained.
- Read up here about 10 Things We Can Learn from the Old Homesteads. You know, in case you need to up and start a homestead on the fly. (Not that that's something that – ahem- any of us think about on a – ahem – somewhat frequent basis.)
- I thought you might enjoy this very cool photography of individual snowflakes! Fascinating.
- Serious scholarship on dragons, from the expert J. R. R. Tolkien, of course: Why Smaug Still Matters.
- Sweet little printable gift tags for your Christmas wrapping from Orange You Lucky!
- So… I wasn't aware of this new version of The Sound of Music that apparently just came out. With Carrie Underwood?! I admit to being a bit confused and also a bit curious. In any case, this is a sweet consideration of the story and the film, especially in light of the death of Eleanor Parker (the Baroness) this past week.
For some laughs:
- Not as rousing as Babe, but enjoyable for a low-key chuckle: the sheepdog who's got to round up the lads.
- In case you're wondering what to get your baby for Christmas (don't worry, I'm kidding), here's a handy wish list from one: A Ten-Month-Old's Letter to Santa.
From the archives:
