Every Thursday, here at Like Mother, Like Daughter!
Bridget and I (and of course Roxie) have been trying to get out and take advantage of these weeks of weather that when we characterize it, we say, “It's so New England.” Which of course, it's not, except that once in a rare while…
I gave Bridget my “this is biology — looking around and seeing the life in one patch… and wondering about it… ” talk, since she is doing some heavy-duty high school bio, which always means the dreaded cell.
Homeschooling tip: It's far better to tackle chemistry before the college-prep bio, because otherwise, you have to do an emergency chemistry course-within-a-course in order to understand what the heck is going on with the blasted Golgi apparatus and metabolic pathways and photosynthesis and what have you.
But — it's good to remember what you are talking about, which is living things and how they do what they do.
Hence, the “one of each bouquet.” One stem each of as many flowers/seeds that you can find in one place. (There were mushrooms but we didn't pick them. She did correctly categorize them, though!)
Fall is the best time for it. You can make one with any age child, the younger the better, but don't stop with doing it once.
Before:
Overladen hydrangea that is supposed to be forming into a tree but is rather a droopy shrubbery.
During:
Picking of enormous blooms the size of your head (if you're a Lawler), filling this whole tablecloth. They are piled up there, just so you know.
After:
Um, no difference.
Keep up the good work, see the beauty around you, know that your part in this world is indispensable, and enjoy!
