Every Thursday, here at Like Mother, Like Daughter!
Waiting…
Fresh, warm, homemade bagels for breakfast. How's that for impressive?
What was the special occasion, you ask? Well, while they were on the West Coast, Sukie and the Quack came by for a visit!
We had such a fun time with them, particularly Pippo, who likes getting one-on-one (or two-on-one) time with his aunts and uncles, and the Lt, who missed out on quality Sukie/Quack time during the wedding season this summer.
And me, too. I don't get to see my sisters (or their husbands) nearly as often as I'd like!
The other day, I offered to read Pippo a book during lunch. He loves it when we read during meals — it's actually how I got him to sit still long enough to eat an entire meal once he got big enough to really assert his will and try squirm away to more interesting things. He just would get bored before he got full!
(Apparently Mama's mealtime conversation skills need some work.)
But once I started reading to him, he got the hang of it. Now he eats like a champ.
Anyway, I suggested I could read to him while he ate his sandwich and pear, and he was so excited that he proceeded to pull out an entire shelf's worth of books, one by one, and stack them up carefully on the table.
How are your preparations coming along? Are you more on top of things than I am?
Debbie says
Well, Rosie, now you know how long Pippo *feels* lunchtimes usually last when there are no books to hold him spellbound! 🙂

Haha… Debbie, you might just be right…

What lovely bagels!
We often listen to audiobooks during lunch; it helps quell the multi-child chaos. 🙂 My littles always clamor to see the pictures up close for picture books, though, so we only read those on the couch.
It looks like he has good taste in books. 🙂

Those bagels look delicious! And I love the picture of Pippo and all his books (:

I always appreciate your beautiful photos. I feel like I am taking my time through Advent, but suddenly feel paniced as I think of all to be done yet. I know it will, slowly. I think the shopping and preparations are nearly finished and it's the wrapping and some baking that I'd like to find the time for yet.
I'm hopping in on {phfr} this week since I've had a long hiatus from it and it seems the perfect venue for today. Thanks for hosting!

Just curious to know why Sukie's husband is called, The Quack. I think I know why, but I'm dying to hear your reason.:)
priestswife says
I think he is going to be a doctor
Sukie says
He's a doctor in the Army, currently in his intern year. Rosie already calls her husband by his rank, so… 🙂
PNG says
I remember reading somewhere he is a doctor. My husband is, too. He's a Doctor of Chiropractic which I lovingly tease him about. I say he's not a real doctor so as a joke I call him a “quackopractor.” He pretends to be upset with me, but it is playful banter. However, his profession does take a lot of flack from the other disciplines. I had no clue THAT is a rank in the army. You learn something new everyday!;)

Great idea, reading at the table! I remember when my son was a toddler, the stacks of books he made for us to read together seemed taller than he was.
I don't know if I posted the first time you showed us your sewing table, but I love it. So useful and pretty!

I always read to my kids too at mealtimes. We started when they were probably Pippo's age and I still do it now that they are 6. Sometimes it's the only time we have for reading out loud. For a special treat, I'll let them have a story time picnic where we eat lunch either outside and read a bunch of books at once or if the weather's not nice, we just sit on a blanket in the living room and do it. They love it! I have a Christmas book picnic planned as a special surprise for them their first day off from school next week.

Mmm, homemade bagels! I bow to superior housewifely skills. 🙂 Were they complicated to make?
I wish I'd thought of reading to my toddlers with the attention spans too short to finish a meal — much better than “drive-by dinner!”

Fresh, warm, homemade bagels…yep, very impressive.
Any special recipe?
Mrs. B. says
Yes, Rosie, please share your recipe, since they look so beautiful and yummy! I thought bagels are one of the things you can't really make at home, but your look so wonderful I would love to know the secret! Thank you!
The Happy Mother says
Another request for the bagel recipe! Thank you!

Just have to say that those bagels look amazing! Yum!

Valerie, Mrs B, Happy Mother, I used the bagel recipe from the Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day book. I've made them a few times, and they are very tasty (and indeed, easy to make!).
