The “little of this, little of that” feature from Like Mother, Like Daughter!
This week's giveaway is for a great resource for prayer in the home.
Praying the Rosary just got more beautiful with a resource that we've kind of been wishing for over the years!
The Sacred Art Series Rosary Book will be so helpful with small children during the rosary. It features a built-in sturdy cardboard desktop easel so that it stands on its own, and each page presents one of the original fifteen Mysteries. The images come from the 16th Century work of Goswijn van der Weyden, “The Fifteen Mysteries and the Virgin of the Rosary.”
The pages are heavy card stock with quality printing, and the rings are a sturdy metal binding.
As the family prays the rosary, the children can take turns flipping the pages to the next mystery. (I highly recommend making a very clear rule at the outset for this, e.g. “Biggest to Littlest,” unless you want your Rosary to be one long battle!)
In this way, there is always an image to reflect on and draw wandering minds back to the lives of Jesus and Mary. The book comes in two sizes. The 8″ x 10″ size could be kept in your little oratory/prayer table area and gotten down while praying as a family. Anna, who offered us this giveaway, says her husband has the 4″ x 5″ size on his desk at work. “Even though he does not usually pray the rosary there, he likes that it provides a beautiful image for him to reflect on throughout the day.”
You can keep up with this family's prayer resources on their blog. They are also generously offering $3 off your purchase with the code ROSARYBK which will be in effect until October 30.
a Rafflecopter giveaway
(FYI, you are asked for your email only so that you can be contacted if you win! So do not fear the “registration.” If you are entering the drawing with a comment, don't forget to come back up here and click on the Rafflecopter thingy to get your entries!)
And now onto this week's links!
- Have you ever sold a house? Have you ever gotten mad at yourself for getting it all fixed up just to sell it? Here is a pep-talk for getting your house fixed up for your own family. To live in.
- Angry Hawk Knocks Drone out of Sky (quick video, hat tip to our very own Joseph, who viewed it as a sort of call to arms from the animal kingdom). I guess it's not really a drone, but more like a model plane. I enjoyed seeing the hawk do its thing up close, though!
- St. Louis' advice to his son. Maybe for fathers to read…
- Speaking of beauty, as we have been for a few weeks now, here are some beautiful images for your coloring pleasure. Although of course the aim is for children to learn to draw on their own, tracing and coloring are fantastic exercises in motor control and in training the eye. Do check these out.
- Just a little promo for our very own {pretty, happy, funny, real} meme/link-up that we have here every Thursday on the blog. You can read the idea behind it here. Did you know that now you can link your Instagram photo? Maybe you think that just linking one photo wouldn't count, but it totally would! When I read this post by Ashley at Under the Sycamore (guest posting on Mpix), I thought of how her encouragement for capturing the everyday works for {pretty, happy, funny, real} as well. She's talking about photos of your kids, but the idea behind it — seeing your everyday life through the camera's eye — applies to just life as well. See what you think, and do join us!
- Regarding this post of mine about teaching history, I want to point you to two good articles on the subject. Long ago I came across Beautiful Feet Books. I highly recommend them. They posted an article that just makes sense to me about why to teach American History first (if you live in another country, substitute the history of your country). I'm sure I read it way back when, so when one of our readers commented on it, I wanted to be sure to let you know. Another article is this one from Memoria Press, on why it's not good to start with the chronological method of teaching history (as I argue in my own post).
- Cough syrup for grownups, from The Kitchn.
- A moving account of Carrie Buck and the eugenics movement. Interesting to think about the horror with which we view this sort of progressive idea, and the prevalence among us today of just the same sort of thinking, perhaps repackaged just a bit.
- Roger Scruton tells us why beauty matters. I particularly love this paragraph, with its implications for the vocation of the woman, who manifests in her home this “beauty of everyday life”:
There are two kinds of beauty: the individual, expressive and revealing gesture, and ordinary harmony and fittingness. In everyday life it is the second kind of beauty that is important, and it is exemplified in home-building, gardening and the design of squares, houses and streets. It is important because it expresses and amplifies the human desire for settlement, for an environment in which things fit together and people too. It is an instrument of peace.
(The URL I had here is no longer in existence. I can't find the source of this quote, but it was an interview in which he said this… maybe someday I will stumble upon it again!)
- Did you see this video of Mario Joseph, an Imam (yes, Muslim leader) who converted to Catholicism by his close reading of the Koran? The testimony is well worth listening to (despite the seriously annoying “music” in the background). His simple explication of profound truths of faith and his witness to Christ even as his own father tried to kill him brought tears to my eyes.
- A French WWI soldier's room, unchanged since his death. You know we can't resist this kind of visual confirmation of history…
- Finally, a post on Chant Cafe of that clip of Paul Jernberg's Mass of Philip Neri. Check out the comments! Don't forget that if you enter the code leila you will receive 10% off your purchase from his site of the CD (or download) and/or the score.
Happy Feast of St. Luke!

I read the Guardian article earlier this week and commented to my husband ‘this is just the sort of thing the LMLD ladies like to read about, perhaps I ought to send them a link’ but then promptly forgot about it as I became engrossed in my latest tweaking of our laundry system. I was delighted and rather amused therefore to read about your purchase of The Perfect Hampers and to see a link to the above article. It is somehow satisfying to know the same topics are occupying us on separate continents!

And I do miss linking up with {p,h,f,r}. I feel like I’m not taking many pictures at all right now. Even my Instagram feed is light. It’s certainly not like there isn’t photogenic things happening all the time, I don’t know why I seem to busy now to capture it all. But perhaps I can work a little harder.
Claire says
