~ Capturing the context of contentment in everyday life ~
Every Thursday, here at Like Mother, Like Daughter!
I was proud of myself for remembering to set the table before I went to bed the night before. Pippo obliged by not waking up until after me, so I had a chance to take pictures with everything looking all pretty. I'm glad I did, because of course I didn't take any more until much later in the day. You'll have to trust me, though, that our breakfast was delicious. Decadent French toast, bacon and sausage, sweet potato hash, mimosas… Yum.
(Why yes, that is the Easter tie I made him last year, thank you for noticing! He was wicked excited when he saw that he had a tie, just like Dad.)
Opening Day might not have been the reason for the day off from work, but it certainly is a good reason to sit around watching baseball in your pajamas with your son! (Remember, we're on the West Coast, which means the game started at 10am on Easter Monday. Pajamas aren't so unreasonable.)
Running down the hill, looking far more coordinated in this shot than did in real life. But goodness, is he getting big or what? |
Eventually we all got dressed and went to the little playground at the end of our street.
Somehow, Dad is just a little more exciting than Mom when it comes to playgrounds (though I do my best!).
I went upstairs for a few minutes to get dressed on Easter morning, leaving Pippo playing with his new toy truck from his godparents and the Easter baskets safely up on the sideboard. I came back down to both the baskets (and various wrappers and bits of candy) on the floor and a toddler with mouth and hands full of chocolate.
Part of me was proud of him for taking full advantage of that moment — after all, I should have known better! Happy Easter, kiddo.
Field notes from the Lt's promotion on Tuesday:
1. Schedule important events for a little later in the day whenever possible, so curly hair has a chance to dry properly.
2. When everyone else in the room will be wearing desert cammies, try to find something other than a brown cardigan to go with your cute top.
3. Think of new blog nickname for the Lt.

Happy Easter! Your little guy is just as cute as can be and I just love his tie! Great job on getting a family photo early in the day! I wasn't nearly as lucky, having ours taken at the very end which was still better than nothing. 🙂

Congratulations to the the lieutenant. Perhaps, 'the captain” would be more appropriate. I had an uncle who left the priesthood to marry, when he went back up to Papua New Guinea where he had been a missionary as a priest the islanders called him “Father was” which you have to admit has a certain elegance to it. Perhaps “Lieutenant was” would work (LOL).
Sounds like a lovely easter – admirable work on Pippo's behalf with those baskets. We did an egg hunt but I think we made it too simple as our 2 years 364 day old (as she was easter morning) had all ten of her eggs in 30 seconds flat, though she hasn't shown any particular interest in actually eating them. We will have to be more sneaky next year, and be grateful that her birthday won't fall the day after Easter because the Outlaws coming to stay, confirmation into the Church, Easter and Birthday party are too much in one weekend!
Marcia says
Lovely, lovely family photo… and congratulations to the Lt on his promotion! You're celebrating Easter with family and friends, just the way we would all want to have it. I say again, lovely, just lovely…
Stephanie says
Rosie your family picture is beautiful. God bless you all 🙂
Bobbi (RoL) says
The first photo is lovely and the family photos are so precious! But I think the last photo is my favorite. The expression and love in Lt's eyes are undeniable. I doubt he noticed what you were wearing. He only saw how beautiful you are. 🙂
Wendy in VA says
I have to echo Bobbi — all the pictures are wonderful, but that last photo is priceless. Congratulations to the Captain!
Alice says
Congratulations to the Lt-as-was. Happy Easter week!

Beautiful family! I am so laughing at your being proud of your little boy for stealing chocolate. That's something I would say!
Happy Easter!

I thought you'd like this sweet poem, Rosie… my baby is now 3.5 and I treasure this year like nothing else.
Title: Little Boys of Three
Look tenderly on little boys of three,
Their softness is as fleeting as a flower.
The cheeks like petals such a little hour,
The deepest dimple theirs so transiently;
Even tomorrow softness may be hard.
The little cotton cushions on the knees
turned into bony knobs for climbing trees.
The fists so like a rose grow lean and scarred.
His full moon cheeks will narrow to a line,
the silken hair becomes a brush of bristle,
As Mother's little flower turns to thistle,
And there will linger not one little sign
To prove the cuddly cupid that was he.
Look tenderly on little boys of three.

Congrats to the Capt! Maybe you should refer to him as “The Marine”. He may pick up Major just as fast as Pippo is growing.
Nancy says
Congratulations on the promotion…Easter breakfast sounds delicious!

Rosie, a lovely post. I wonder if the Lt.'s willingness to go down the slide upside down has something to do with Pippo's playground fun. 😉
Chris C says

Thank you, as always, for hosting!

You set a beautiful table Rosie. We had a similar menu here for brunch. It was so very yummy! Congratulations to your hubby on his promotion!! Such an exciting time for your family. Pippo is indeed a big boy and yes…Daddy's are always more fun on the playground. LOL!
Happy, Happy Easter!!
Deirdre says
Awesome! Great photos. I truly cannot believe how big Pippo is getting. And yes, that last pic is great. I kinda like how your cardigan goes… it works.
You would have been proud of how we harnessed group energy to get an Easter photo here before the light was gone! Not sure how it came out, but we were impressed with ourselves.
Rebecca says
Actually, I think the brown cardigan made the picture that much more beautiful because it all “worked”. 🙂
Sweet family, yours.
And ranunculus, though I forget how to spell them, are one of my most favorite flowers ever. I even have them as my blog header! hehehe
Amy Marie says
Congrats to your hubby! 🙂 I did *NOT* get an Easter photo…I feel quite grouchy about it. Oh well. 😉 I just love the shots of your precious son and that breakfast table photo is GORGEOUS! Happy Thursday!

Pippo in his tie: Best. Photo. Ever.
Anabelle Hazard says
Was it just me or did anyone else think that the picture of Rosie pinning the Lt. was totally romantic? And is there a story in here somewhere of how the two of you met?
_Rosie says
Thank you, Anabelle (and everyone else!). I do like it too!
We've been good friends since we were about 16, but didn't go on our first date until about 9 years after we met. Three months later, we were engaged. Maybe someday I'll write a post about it. 🙂
Laura says
That would be a sweet story I am sure…and it IS a tear-jerker of a photo…it's so beautiful…should be called “when a man loves a woman” ! From the perspective of being one of Leila's daughters, Rosie, how much did you learn about being a wife before you married, and what have you learned since you have gotten married(about being a good wife)? Because your hubby is obviously totally in love with you and it's precious!
Anabelle Hazard says
Yay! I look forward to reading it. No pressure but I'll link it on my Catholic love stories series.
Heather S says
In the Army, we call them “make it happen Captain”.
_Jessica says
I love your family photo! We had a drizzly Easter, and I really wanted an outdoor photo. I'm praying for sunshine this Sunday!
I have to second Anabelle's comment. That photo of you and the Lt. is incredibly romantic. 🙂
Amy M. says
I was going to chime in and say, “No, don't change his nickname! I like “the Lt”!” But after reading the comments . . . now I get it 🙂 Perhaps simply “the Captain”, or “the Gentleman Soldier”, abbreviated “the GS”? Or are Marines not considered soldiers because they are their own branch and not part of the Army? I know just enough about military culture to know that one MUST get the (nick)names right or risk causing offence. Once when talking to an Air Force pilot I asked if he was in the Blue Angels, and after seeing how offended he was (because, “those are NAVY pilots”) I will never do that again! (In my defense, they wear blue and fly planes, so I think it is not unreasonable to assume they are in the Air Force!)
_Rosie says
Haha, Amy, I can totally relate. And you're right — “soldier” means Army, and Marines are just Marines (unless you want to call them Soldiers of the Sea, in which case you're safe). I made that mistake early on in his career, and was quickly corrected. 🙂
Amy M. says
Well, I guess Gentleman Soldier is out as a nickname then. Too bad, because it sounds quite distinguished, but so does “the Captain” 🙂 Congratulations to all of you!
Amy Caroline says
That family photo is so precious! That must be framed!
Miranda says
Beautiful pictures.
Congratulations to your Lieutenant!
kayleen says
Sweet family picture! You look so pretty, mama! I always make it a priority to get a family shot. It gets even trickier with 3 children 😉
Congrats on the Lt's promotion! You must be so proud.
Amber says
Love the pictures. And congrats to your husband!
Sue says
I love all the beautiful, sunny photos!! We had such a cloudy, rainy Holy Week this year. Sorry to be chiming in a little late this time!
