In an age where children's music is often highly synthesized and just… loud, I know you will appreciate the delightful sweet tones of these lovely women who've been singing together all their lives.
They introduce themselves:
We’re two sisters — Cecilia is the older and shorter one, Emma the younger and taller
one, in case you’re curious — who grew up in Ada, Michigan.
We were homeschooled K-12th grade. We both attended The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts in New Hampshire. Cecilia is now a schoolteacher, and Emma works for a heating and cooling company. We sing a lot, for fun and for church and at the drop of a hat! Sometimes, we even work it into our jobs (yes, it’s possible).
We got to know our accompanist Ben-David Warner from singing together at our respective families’ Christmas caroling parties! He’s been a great part of this project because he too knows singing as part of his family culture.
“Singsong Pennywhistle” is folk music sung in a clear and straightforward way, that’s appealing to both children and adults. The music choices, although varied, all center on what we thought children and parents would want to listen to as they 1) run in circles around the living room or 2) drive in the car. These two scenarios loom large in our own memories!
We did try to keep parental sanity in mind as well. . .
We were aching to share something that we love dearly: the experience of being in a community that is able to sing together. We grew up in a big homeschooled family that sings nearly constantly.
This has branched out into different forms as we’ve grown up and moved out, but it all had its roots in the simple songs and rounds that our mom would sing to us and lead us in. We did a lot of singing in the car and while doing the dishes.* As we got older, it just got more fun, with lots of spontaneous lyric-making and harmonizing!
As we moved out of that family circle and went to college, we had wonderful experiences singing with a greatly varied group of people, sharing songs, learning new lyrics or variations on old ones, and of course swapping rounds.
We also noticed that folks who had grown up singing simply know more songs and are more comfortable singing in a group, regardless of how “talented” they happened to be. And the power of singing in a group is something one can’t explain; it just has to be experienced. It’s wonderful, though; so wonderful that it’s given us our mission to bring that singing into families.
We all think a lot about the counter-cultural life of faith we’re called to lead. Although we’re making no claims that singing folk music in your family will make your children virtuous, we do firmly believe that it will give them a wonderful natural tuning of the heart to the good, the true and the beautiful. And in this utterly un- and anti-natural world in which we live, a natural foundation for your child to grow from is a great gift.
Finally, please do us the favor of spreading the word, in whatever way you’re best at: follow us on Instagram, leave a review, tell your friends, buy the CDs for your godchildren. . . we’d be so grateful!
*A caveat: don’t get any ideas about picture-perfect Von Trapp moments as we all sweetly helped our mom in the kitchen. It wasn’t like that at all. . . but after we had finished complaining or trying to get out of chores, it probably was a relief to our mother when we did sing. You’d have to ask her. I haven’t yet. . .
On to our links!
- On March 16 I will be in Portland, OR — All the info is here! Come say hi and remind me who you are (especially if you have a “handle” that isn't your name, like on IG — in any case, I'm bad at names but will be thrilled to meet you!).
- If you have boys, you need to read this fantastic post from Kathy at 9 Peas — mom to eight boys! (and one girl!). Well, even if you have all girls or just don't want to be a nag even if you have no children at all but maybe a husband around somewhere who was a boy once upon a time — just read her post. Plus, she includes great pictures of her happy family and I think we could use that kind of cheering up right about now!
- Not sure that I quite buy the “scientific” aspect of this article, but fairy tales are very old.
- Beautiful mosaics in the subway (not sure I buy the climate change thing but I guess I'm in a skeptical mood today).
- It has become fashionable in contemporary Catholic traditional circles to dismiss the American Founding as Lockean and therefore fatally “liberal” in the sense of unmoored from immutable truths or responsibilities. Dr. Samuel Gregg examines the context of the undeniably Lockean aspects of American political roots and finds this theory wanting.
- Don't miss the article linked within the one above, on sentimentalism and its corrosiveness to the spirit.
- An important, fact-filled but also common-sense article on why children need society to support marriage and not tax citizens for the purpose of government-run childcare, which doesn't have the intended consequences and is based on bad premises.
- Cardinal Caffarra, one of the signers of the Dubia, five questions put to Pope Francis on his document Amoris Laetitia, gave this address just before he died. “We are no longer witnesses, but deserters, if we do not speak openly and publicly.”
- Lent begins this coming week! Get your sweet Lenten calendar here at Pondered in my Heart. This year our dear Lydia has done one for the Byzantine Lent as well.
From the archives:
Today is the feast of Blessed Charles the Good. Tomorrow is the last Sunday before Lent begins. Good time to talk together (husband and wife) about what we want to do this coming season (maybe pray Vespers together? the Rosary?) and then have a family council to prep the troops.
Don't forget — leave a comment to win the lovely children's music CD — Singsong Pennywhistle! Two winners this week!
While you’re sharing our links with your friends, why not tell them about Like Mother, Like Daughter too!

I remember that so much of our music education when I was in school many years ago was learning folk songs. I still think it’s important and taught them to my children and now my grandchildren. This CD would be a great addition! Thanks for pointing us to it!
Kate says
Ah, Samuel Gregg of the Acton Institute. He’s playing fast and loose with the truth and arguing against a straw man, trying to reconcile his American religion with the Catholic Faith. I notice he did not actually quote the founders, but a Presbyterian minister’s views of the founding. I wonder what Gregg does with Pius IX’s “Quanto Cura” or the Syllabus of Errors. Or the constitutions from the First Vatican Council. Use them for kindling?
Julie Churchwell says
Oh my! How lovely! I actually live in Grand Rapids. Would love to win.

Dear Auntie Leila,

Truly though, thank you for your words of encouragement. Your posts give me something to strive for without making me feel discouraged. I love that you share your wisdom on building a family culture, creativity, and philosophical tidbits about society/culture at large. I love it all! If you are ever in St. Louis, MO, please let me know. You would be so welcome to come over for a cup of tea and chat!
Raquel says
I am always on the lookout for new music like this for children (we have worn out copy of Smithsonian Folkways our!). Really hope I win – St Cecelia, ora pro nobis!
CamiCakes says
We are such a musical household. My husband’s first love was singing and he pursued opera with a degree in vocal performance. While he did sing in several opera houses and dozens of productions, his main “gig” nowadays is cantoring at church. It’s a real treat for me to hear him share his gift. Fellow parishioners really appreciate it too. Music and singing is so powerful. Our 5 children are all still little, 7 and under, but we sing, we dance, we dabble in piano, we talk about forming a family musical group someday. It’s fun to think about. But I do hope the culture of singing sticks and we have fond memories years from now, of singing our way through chores. I can’t say I’ve ever thought of it or even have really attempted to enforce set chores just yet. 🤔 But I like the idea. Would love this CD! One of our other children’s folk music favorites are the Okee Dokee Brothers!

I love music! I am hoping to instill such a love in my 5 month old daughter. Thus far, she almost always smiles when you sing to her and music is often the only thing to calm her down when she’s really upset. So I’m hopeful we’re on a good trajectory!
We listen to Rain for Roots, but I’m always on the hunt for new music, so thank you for sharing!
I’m new to LMLD, at the recommendation of my sister, and I have really enjoyed what I’ve read. I’ve found a lot of encouragement and inspiration here, so thank you, Leila and girls. (:

Thank you for sharing about singsong penny whistle! Every since we got married we have wanted to raise our kids with a love for music…. Lots of random singing throughout the day and fun music jams in the evenings. My husband got a fiddle just before our first was born and habs been learning both Irish and folk music. It’s been such a joy to watch our kids dance around. I’ve even begun learning to play the concertina with hopes to accompany him some day! It’s such a joy hearing the kids begin to randomly sing on their own throughout the day as they play.

I have to admit that I always am bemused when Americans talk about God and the founding of the US as if those two things are related somehow. I just genuinely cannot relate to how being an American and Christian are connected in many American’s minds. Your blog has given me a deeper understanding of religious people in the US and I am always fascinated by the differences in our culture.
