Well, the moment I saw these in my Instagram feed, I had to make them! My son's company has fox in the name, so making them for my littlest grandson had to happen!
I knew I had just the right orange wool (I can't remember what I had made before with it) — did I have any white? Yes… but at the bottom of my stash box… just a little…
In my typical fashion, I made it with only a tiny bit to spare — but enough to tweak the pattern to make the thumb tips white too, which I just think is the cute icing on the cuteness cake, don't you?
Notes: The pattern is found here on DROPS — I (of course) made a mistake in following the pattern, so when I redid it, I left out the little white accents in the body of the mitten by mistake. But I added the little “tails” on the thumbs so I think we're square!
I have gone over to making my ribbing (in socks too) by knitting the knit stitches in the back — seems to keep the cuff from getting stretched out. I make a crochet I-cord to keep naughty kittens from losing their mittens (much easier than a knitted one).
bits & pieces
- An interview with Natan Sharansky, Soviet-era dissident, on his book Fear No Evil and his experiences with the Communist dictatorship that put him in prison for 9 years. I highly recommend for you and your high school students too.
- RIP Henry Aaron— an exemplary model of grace under pressure. (Did you know that he converted to Catholicism?)
- Knitters — a method for making top-down hats without a pattern (but I think you still have to figure out your gauge, no matter what she says, and I may or may not be bad at that).
- Bradley J. Birzer on Edmund Burke's view of the French Revolution (with implications for our day, I must say).
- Do you suffer from migraines? Perhaps this supplement can help. The info came my way via my friend Shyla, from a pediatric neurologist who has good results in his practice. (I have no stake in this product, just passing it along.) I have been growing feverfew in my garden and look forward next year to making infusions of it (for arthritis, as my migraines have subsided as I have gotten older).
- Conscience and the Covid vaccine. If nothing else, we as a society must confront the entrenchment of the trafficking in aborted fetal body parts. There are other ways to derive, test, and produce medical and other products.

Dear Leila,
We have decided NOT to get the Covid vaccination…based on the vaccine’s dependence on aborted fetal parts.
My husband, Fr. Jim Conyers, and I watched John Henry Westen’s Youtube show when he interviewed Pamela Acker…an immunologist. She shared a great deal about the Covid 19 vaccine, and how it, and all other vaccines depend on aborted babies, no more than 5 minutes old, to harvest the cells for the vaccines.

It is not an easy decision to make….and perhaps IF a vaccine becomes available that does not come, in any way, from live babies, we will reconsider.

Leila,
Thank you for recommending MigreLief! I’ve not heard of this before, so ordered it to try for our 13 yr. old daughter who suffers from migraines. So glad to know there’s a natural option we can try. We’ve tried medication (I was uneasy with this for a 12 year old, and it didn’t help anyway), correcting her vision, and chiropractic. Nothing seems to bring complete relief. So hopeful to have this option.
Thank you!
Melisa

We too ordered this for our child — 14 year-old son. He has migraines infrequently, but he’d love to be able to avoid them altogether!

Cardinalli’s article is the most forceful piece I have ever read on the the details of using fetal cell lines from aborted children——- and for that, I thank you. I did not know these specific details (on what the number means, nor the initials HEK) and so, even though I was already opposed to using vaccines derived this way just on principle, I had not investigated the details of exactly how these cell lines are obtained. I cannot imagine anything more barbaric used in the service of modern medicine, but these details are so incredibly Mengelian that I shudder to think of ethical implications for our society, and for Church leaders whose advisors probably have full access to this information. The author, of course, does not get into the issues of direct versus remote responsibility, and as I recall, the letter that used to be up on the Children of God website (written long ago, inquiring into the ethics of taking the MMR vaccine) discusses this in a protracted footnote. That letter states that it is not a sin to take the MMR vaccine because of the remote relationship we have to those responsible for making the vaccine and, even more so, to those who participated in the procuring of the fetal cell line. So— I wish she had addressed this and taken time to refute it with a bit more force. To my mind, this is still a real question. So, while I personally find the origins of the cell line repugnant enough to warrant my distaste and rejection of any vaccines connected to these cell lines, I am still hard pressed to make the kind of argument I suspect the Church would need to make in order to tell its members that receiving the vaccine is a sin. That is the argument that needs to be taken up, still. In spite of the barbaric act of obtaining the cell line, it is, unfortunately, still remotely related to my choices. Are there any articles that deal specifically with this theological questions?
Thanks for your continued work in giving your readers important information like this. God bless you, Leila.

With regard to migraines, I must share that addressing hypervitaminosis A has completely eliminated mine (and they were making my life very dark, it was terrifying). Engineer Grant Genereaux and Dr. Garrett Smith are doing ongoing work on this surprisingly common cause of health problems. Not just the migraines but a number of other issues in me, my husband, and my kids have resolved. Trying not to hijack the comments too egregiously so just look up their work if you’re interested.

The knitted gloves are just lovely! My wife has now tied them up to our daughter too) We would like to thank you for advising MigreLief, since my wife and daughter have migraines. My wife had them for more than 5 years, and my daughter had more than a year and it was unbearable, the doctors prescribed us something that did not help us, so my wife started looking for different advice on the Internet and found you. MigreLief helped us and this is the most important thing! Thank you very much!
