I urge you to read Peter Kwasniewski's new book, Reclaiming Our Roman Catholic Birthright: The Genius and Timelessness of the Traditional Latin Mass. (affiliate link)
And I'm giving a copy away!
I have all my readers in mind for this book, whether you are already a lover of Tradition, or go to the Novus Ordo Mass, or are Protestant, or are Jewish, or don't quite believe in anything but just like coming here anyway because you appreciate the collective memory… this book is for you.
Certainly, for Catholics, many sensed a disturbance during the shutdown. It seems that many of our bishops and clergy have suddenly forgotten this Gospel: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Mt 10:28)
I keep getting messages that I've compressed into one, so you can get the idea (and perhaps you have thought these thoughts too):
Our parish had been moving in the direction of Latin at our Novus Ordo Masses, and more sacred music, but during the shutdown this trend has stalled or even reversed. We're now required to receive Holy Communion in the hand. We are concerned about our children. What are they learning? Why has the Traditional Latin Mass church in the next state been offering the Sacraments but our priests are nowhere to be found? Will my children grow up in the faith? Will they remain Catholic?
Prof. Kwasniewski's book comes at the right time. There is no way he could have known that many would be asking questions about how we worship — about how we express eternal truths — even more intently than ever before due to the pressure brought on by Covid, yet the answers he has been giving for years, collected here and presented systematically, satisfy them all thoroughly and with great clarity (and charity).
Prof. Kwasniewski, a theologian and writer, covers many aspects of Tradition, from the virtues of the Traditional Latin Mass itself to questions about active participation and provocatively, “Good and Bad Liturgical Parenting.”
For me, it's all compelling, but the sections that inspire the most, that have the most potential to awaken a desire and the will to recover our true heritage, are about the importance of offering something sublime, time-tested, and challenging on every level to our children — something they can't outgrow or come to find silly when compared to beliefs the world has to offer.
These are themes I stress here all the time: seeking out what is noble and timeless for the future generations. Why would we then offer them something weak, watered down, and constantly changing when it comes to worship? Or, as we have found in these past months, something that its leaders shockingly find easily dispensable?
To encourage you to read the book and get a copy for a loved one, I am offering one here to one winner of the giveaway — just leave a comment to enter!

We are “dabbling” in the TLM since our NO parish has made masks mandatory and discouraged communion on the tongue. We are torn- we want to stay in our diocesan parish and fight for reverence and support the good priests coming out of the seminary. However, we now have four young children and we are considering what the Mass looks like to them. This book may help us in our decision.

I would love to read this book; thank you for sharing it with us. Like a previous commenter, I am also on the fence, with regards to the Latin Mass versus a reverently celebrated Novus Ordo. Either way, I look forward with hope to a restoration of reverence in our liturgies!

I am very interested to see this book and am highly interested in reading it. We just moved to Thomas Aquinas College in Massachusetts, where we, for the first time, have been attending the Latin Mass regularly. I have been struggling with it a bit as I am usually standing in the back with a fussy baby, so I think this book would be a very helpful read. On a completely different note, we are contemplating raising chickens. Is there a breed that you would especially recommend?
mama2katz says

I’ve been assisting at the TLM for years but- if this helps anyone out there- it was not an immediate attraction. It is in many ways very different than the Ordinary Form. But! Like all good things, exposure and experience have created a deep love and appreciation for its riches. A Roman missal is very helpful but it can be confusing at first and is not “necessary”. In fact, the Extraordinary Form highlights the reality that the *priest* is the one offering the Holy Sacrifice; we assist, yes, not necessarily vocally but in an act of the will and intellect, if possible. (I have assisted at countless Masses while soothing babies and following toddlers in the vestibule 🙂 Reading the missal during a quiet moment at home or a book- even one geared toward children- that explains certain aspects of the liturgy can fill in the gaps as you go along.
Finally, a word/warning about the “bony fingers” as my husband and I call them. Some devotees of the TLM can come across as very judgmental and even uncharitable. But there are many joyful Catholics (both lay and priests) who embrace it; don’t let a few bad apples spoil the bunch!
Melissa Sebestyen says
I attend the TLM and am very happily back at Mass. It’s funny. For my husband, the TLM was love at first sight. For me, it took about a year to really prefer going to that vs. a Novus Ordo Mass. There’s something about it that I think resonates much more intuitively with men. Though I will add that I am now just as devoted to the old Mass as he is.
I’d be grateful for an opportunity to win this book.

I’m pleased to report that my Novus Ordo parish seems to be moving steadily, despite the shutdown. The priests now offer Mass ad orientem and we have chanted Latin Mass parts (especially useful now that we don’t have a choir!)

So timely! Bookmarking for later reading. Our priest retired and with him the Latin Mass, 1962 version. It was like loosing a person. There’s so much there, and so much in the way into the heart of Christ.
Ann says
I have had my eye on this book. Thank you for the giveaway. We have attended NO and TLM. There is a beauty in the silence at the TLM and every movement and prayer has meaning. We also have attended a beautiful Chant Mass on Sunday evenings. It is a marriage between the NO and TLM. The priest is ad orientam and I find it easier to pray with the hymns done in Chant. There is no loud, nonsensical music…so peaceful and sublime. In our area it has been difficult to obtain the sacraments. By the grace of God, we found a parish that was offering outside confessions. It amazes me that the Sacrament of Confession was not a priority for parishes as they started opening. A lost opportunity to show the faithful, who have been away from the Sacrament for over three months, that the priority should be seeking confession before receiving Our Lord. We have fewer Masses offered here, even in parishes that have large spaces, but in a diocese near ours, a Latin Mass Parish is offering more Masses. Wishing you and your family a Happy 4th. May God bless our country!
Ann says
Can’t wait to read this one!
Candice says
We have recently started attending an FSSP parish after spending years in a less than lukewarm parish. We were a bit scared that it would turn off our kids, or they would be confused, and that we would be unable to explain what was happening. But we found that our kids were more attentive at Mass, more in awe, and we were all more aware of the mysteries surrounding us. We’ve had a hard time explaining this to friends who are mystified why we’ve gone over there, when there is a perfectly fine Novus Ordo Parish 20 minutes away that offers a Latin Mass sometimes. But it also (during usual times) offers a teen Mass, a contemporary hymns Mass, a traditional hymns Mass, etc. It’s like a choose your own adventure book, or pick your flavor of ice cream! When we go to the FSSP parish, we know what we are going to get. Low Mass and High Mass. Tradition without apologizing for it. And we’ve found, during COVID, that it also offers us a bit of normalcy when the rest of the world has gone nuts. More confession times, more Mass times. These priests are working their tails off to bring the sacraments to the people. It’s fantastic.
I would live to win a copy of the book. My guess is, it could help us out into words what we’ve been experiencing first hand.

Many thanks.

This looks like an excellent book. It is the Latin Mass Churches near us where the faithful can’t wait to get back to the Sacraments and where the priests have done all they could to provide them during the pandemic lock down. Their churches are as filled as they are allowed to be with all the new rules, whereas some of the regular parishes aren’t even open yet or don’t have parishioners interested in coming back.
Christina says
We’ve been attending a Latin mass since the shut down because we were looking for reverence and priests who aren’t wearing a mask on the altar, but we admittedly don’t know much about the extraordinary form! This is a timely book that I want to read. Thank you for the recommendation!

Thank you for the Leninist article that you linked in your last posting. My, was was it timely for us! I am reading aloud World War II and Cold War espionage books to our daughters – just for fun. (Yes, I have to skip some parts, haha!) I realized that because we are immersed in reading about the tentacles of Communism, in all of its dress-ups, and its parading about the culture wearing other fashionable names, that we were, of course, going to recognize bits of it in our own country. But again, knowing that I had a new bias for looking for that kind of thing, I believed that I could take my noticing it all with a grain of salt. Maybe I was just imagining it? Then you posted the article you found. Whoa.
Cheers to you, Auntie Leila, for being a constant support to homeschooling mothers!!! I never quite think that I am “doing it right” out here in Texas. It still feels like the Wild West sometimes. But at least I know that you are here, on the continent of Internet, to back me up. Having a place where I can read from someone who has been battling in these same trenches is the shot of Vitamin C that I need. And lately I have needed it. You contribute greatly toward the “WHY I DO ALL THIS.” Though we may never meet in person, I dearly appreciate your guidance. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Happy Independence Day Weekend to you and your whole family!

Thanks for hosting this Leila. I would definitely be interested. I know of no TL masses nearby. The one I went to once was over an hour away and turned out to be Carmelite Mass. I’m still not sure what the differences are, but I’m hoping to find something I can use to explain something more substantial to my five boys who are losing/have lost the faith. Please pray for us.
God Bless…

I have been praying to find a resource that will help me better understand the Latin Mass. intellectually, I am pulled to it and know in my heart that it is truer and nobler. However, due to health reasons, it is difficult for me to drive the long distance every day or every Sunday to participate. I NEED this book.

I am so glad to see this book featured- thank you! We began attending the Extraordinary Form Mass in 2010 and have been blessed abundantly by it. I love the title of this book bc I too felt like I did not receive my birthright as a Roman Catholic- having not experienced the Mass of the Saints and of my grandparents and ancestors until I was 34 yrs! There is no going back only forward with the fullness of our faith and Tradition. I love being a Catholic!

Molly B. says
This book looks great, thank you for the recommendation. I have read Fr. Jackson’s Nothing Superfluous, and Martin Mosebach’s The Heresy of Formlessness, and I suspect Dr. Kwasniewski’s book will round out my intellectual appreciation of the TLM. My love of this Mass is growing (slowly, as I’m usually in the back with a busy toddler!). I hope and pray that my husband will be drawn to it also, but he is only recently returned to the faith and so the baby food/spoon-feeding style of the Novus Ordo is better for his faith to grow right now. My older girls and I did attend a TLM at a diocesan parish in the archdiocese of Boston this weekend, the priests and altar servers put on masks to distribute Communion.
The article about wonder was great, too! I love Circe Institute, and the book linked within the article looks very promising. I was recently introduced to a great science curriculum provider, Novare Science and Math (acquired by Classical Academic Press), who “advocate a paradigm for teaching science that has proven to be a true game changer for student academic achievement: Wonder, Integration, and Mastery. These principles flow from a robust Kingdom Perspective and form the core of the Novare philosophy.” I’m excited to teach their Biology course to my high school students this Fall.
Thank you Auntie Leila, once again, for all the resources you provide and share!
Regina says
Thank you for the post and insight into this book. I am not a well-read Catholic… even the term Novus Ordo is new to me. I have never attended a Latin Mass or even been attracted to it. But the basic idea of celebrating Mass for God’s sake rather than my own is enough of an icebreaker for me to peek around my prejudice of Traditional Latin Mass, that it is only for the ultra pious and rather “starched” Catholic (sorry for that), and give it a softer thought. Thanks for the glimpse!

The book looks very good, I will definitely have to buy a copy. I just want to say that the shut down affected Extraordinary Form the same as Novos Ordo Mass. Our parish has EF Mass every day and durning the shut down there was no Mass. Now that we are back we have to wear masks, children are greatly discouraged from attending Mass due to the fact that they touch everything. The bathrooms are shut down, every extra parish event has been canceled. It feels very different and cold and unfriendly. So don’t blame all this on Novos ordo Mass.

This looks so good. Thanks for the opportunity to win a copy. It will definitely be added to my list. We currently attend a very reverent NO mass. The only EF mass at our parish is a low mass and the little kids definitely struggle without the music (and I also love the music). We came from Saint John Cantius in Chicago before moving here and we were very spoiled. I’m praying that some day our parish will be able to have high masses regularly.
