Early distant warnings:
Well, this one is immediate: Tomorrow is Candlemas and also the beginning of the Seven Sundays of St. Joseph.
If I can figure out how to do it without too much time (since I'm still trying to get my book manuscript out the door), I'd like to do a Lenten reading on A Return to Modesty by Wendy Shalit.
If you think you'd be up for that, maybe start the process of getting a hold of the book. (affiliate link — probably also available at the library — and the new edition is apparently only different in that she added a foreword, so the first edition can work fine for our purposes I think).
On to decorating news flash: I have long been hunting for a pair of comfy chairs for this spot in my living room. Two weeks ago I found this one, just one, on facebook marketplace. The lovely lady who was selling it (her house is gorgeous) told me in response to the question “do you have another one” that if she had, she would keep them, and I quickly made the deal lest she change her mind anyway.
It was wicked cheap and sturdy and also reupholstered, which as thrifters know, upholstery is where great old furniture goes to die. Deirdre says the chair balances the piano, and maybe another chair is not needed.
Anyway, I love this chair and am super happy to have gotten it, and had to share!
Notes: Rug and piano from the Chief's parents. Painting over mantel (partially obscured) by Habou (she also painted the thrifted magazine rack). Icon from Rosie and Philip from their Florence trip. Antlers found in the woods by the boys in days gone by. Curtains in dining room from World Market, wish they would have more in this vein. Yes, we need to paint this room and maybe in the process repair the hole in the plaster where the new thermostat got put in… five years ago.
bits & pieces
- One minute (but watch to the end) — a beautiful film about marriage. I'm not crying, you're crying. Iranian filmmakers are the best. I highly recommend Children of Heaven as well — and again, watch to the very end.
- Jane Stannus: there is no Catholic feminism. A sober analysis of the inherent contradiction between the ideology of feminism and the truths of Christianity, and the implications for the future of the Church. So what is the vision for women? I am working on trying to articulate that, but truthfully, this whole blog is my answer…

I picked up a chair just like that (but upholstered in green) from Goodwill. It is so comfortable for napping. Our family fights over it, I need to find another one to restore family harmony. On to FB Marketplace.

I am looking for information on learning to chant. I tried your search box but did not turn up anything. I could swear that you posted about that and also recommended another website.

I am a very beginner and there were a lot of exercises and linked musical examples but no text explaining how to use them. I thought you had also recommended a tutorial on the website of one of the professors where your husband teaches.

Loved the short film! And agree completely with your endorsement of Iranian filmmakers. I loved Children of Heaven but Color of Paradise (by the same director) is one of my all time favorite films!!
Congrats on the new chair – it is perfect and that’s a great spot.

I think the room looks well balanced. I love the chair.

Oooh, I’m excited that my library has A Return to Modesty!
Mary Eileen says
Just ordered A Return to Modesty, as it felt like the most sane thing I could do after unadvisedly watching a replay of the Super Bowl Halftime show…..yikes.

Link to progesterone to prevent miscarriage was interesting but I thought that was old news, I had progesterone injections in my last two pregnances, after two babies followed by two losses, those babies are both over 30 now
Annie says
Not only do many OBs not offer it, but many mainstream voices have disparaged those who have suggested using progesterone to prevent m/c, preterm birth, postpartum depression… it is amazing and encouraging that mainstream medicine is catching up to what the Pope Paul VI Institute and others have been saying for decades.
Eva says
Progesterone seems to get a bad rep in mainstream media, with many mixed reviews and OBs not thinking it’s worth the bother. That being said, not sure if there’s any risks of taking in “just in case”.
After dealing with secondary infertility, our NaPro instructor suggested progesterone immediately after OVULATION, rather than after a confirmed pregnancy test. Those two weeks were vital, particularly if the mother had any autoimmune issues (don’t quote me, but along those lines). Anyways, interesting nonetheless. Should add, we were blessed with another sweet baby after three losses.
Leila says
You would think — but there are still OBs who don’t offer it.

Thank you for your reminder about the 7 Sundays of St Joseph.
I just put the Return to Modesty book on hold at the library and hope it works out for a Lenten study. The Casti Cannubii study you lead a while back (pretty sure it was 2013 as that was our 25th wedding anniversary) was beautiful and helped me in my marriage. Grace and peace to you!

Got the book! Ready when you are!
Patti Hohne says
I secured 2 copies of Return to Modesty (for my 24 yr old daughter and I) via Amazon. We are ready!
However, if you are still looking for a copy, checkout “A Libris” for loads of copies. I feel like buying a hundred and lending them out. Come to think of it, I think I will buy a few more 99 cent copies.
