The weekly “little of this, little of that” feature here at Like Mother, Like Daughter!
On Monday we went to the excellent Memorial Day ceremony and parade, shivering a bit and not actually getting rained on; after which Hoodsie cups were distributed widely. Nothing says hometown parade like a Hoodsie cup! (Not pictured but close by — but not eating ice cream — baby Josie, in the arms of a willing young friend.)
And when the sun does shine, we garden like crazy people. I'm that stiff and sore…
On Wednesday evening I'll be speaking at St. Mary's Visitation Parish in Elm Grove, Wisconsin. Apparently they have a nice new atrium that holds lots of people, so I hope you can be there! I'd love to meet you even if it was at the park (I've done that!). Goodness, truth, beauty — let's talk!
{If you are interested in having me speak to your group, drop me a line and I'll give you the nitty-gritty particulars! It doesn't matter if you are not Catholic or your group is not Catholic, as I've sometimes been asked. I am willing to come talk!}
On to our links!
- Remember Madame Defarge in Dickens' Tale of Two Cities, knitting away? Well, apparently it was really a thing, knitting as a tool of espionage.
- Bridget, having completed her junior year at Thomas More College, attended the graduation ceremonies there and recommends the commencement address, given by Dale Ahlquist, which touches on what he calls “The Chesterton Option”.
- Remember our discussion of Romano Guardini's vision of the Logos as revealed in the Liturgy? This reflection by Fr. George Rutler on “false Pentecostal enthusiasm” resonates with those thoughts as well.
- Ever since I first read about Fr. Solanus Casey, years ago, I've wanted to know more. How wonderful that he will soon be beatified!
- We celebrated the feast of St. Joan of Arc last week; sorry to be behind, but this article about her is still worth reading.
- I thought this was a lovely tour of a lovely garden, and look forward to learning more from this site. The vegetable garden has finally gotten under way, however slowly, around these parts.
From the archives:
- Whenever the season changes (yes, for me it's still changing, as Spring's gears are grinding slowly in these parts), we need a reboot. If you find you can't remember what the heck to make for supper, maybe it's time to think about grilling instead of stewing. And here's a simple way to organize your day — but sometimes you need to just surf!
St. Charles Lwanga and Companions, Martyrs, pray for us! Tomorrow is the great feast of Pentecost! Many blessings to you all!

Hello Leila – I love the blog posts as always. You are my tea time with a friend as I’ve said before. I read through the archives so often for inspiration, motivation and it never fails to help me to keep moving ahead. The competence vs. perfection has become my mantra on so many days of late. I am so grateful you shared that post with us. I always feel more balanced when laundry and meals are covered each day. Even though I know better – occasionally that feeling of “imperfection” creeps in and I remember that competence is all that is really required. What amazes me is that my children are grown and I still have to remind myself of this.
To Rosie:
What a lovely Memorial day spent with your family Rosie. I know how busy you must be with your little ones at this stage. Blessings to you and yours.
Thanks for sharing!
Faith

So…forgive this random comment…I am currently reading The Benedict Option…and I read Esolen’s Out of the Ashes…and so I love the idea of a Chesterton Option. Reading these as a mama, I feel it is all one battle cry to do things well within the home, all the culture type things you write about here. It sometimes makes me panic a bit how the future of Western Civilization is literally decided right now about how we do things…but then again it also reminds me of D-day and how the allied forces took the beach, they got a toehold. All the men acting individually not knowing if what they did that day would help but they knew they had to act, they had to do something not really knowing if anyone else on the beach was having any success. But they did do something, they got a small piece of land that would ultimately lead to victory…I feel like we have a toehold!
Leila says
Stephanie, that’s a good way of putting it!
I think there is great hope amidst great evil. As always…

Just a few weeks ago I decided to try that sticky note method because I hate traditional planners but keeping everything in Google Calendar means I let myself get sidetracked by screens way too much. Genius! Keeps me much more focused, yet with plenty of flexibility. Thank you for sharing it!

You’re welcome!

This is totally random but I admire your curly hair! I have curly hair and still desperate to figure out how to care for it, even more now that we’ve moved to the desert. I know your said you used ‘product'( vague memory from older poster), anything in particular you’d recommend?
Leila says
Aw, thanks Valerie! (Of course, you might be directing this comment to Rosie, who has LOTS of curly hair there in the post and in real life as well, and she thanks you too, just in case 🙂
I use Fructus Curl Scrunch gel (or something that sounds like that). Rosie does too. She does leave-in conditioner (Fructus “sleek N shine” leave-in conditioner, going by “feel” on these names LOL). I would never leave in my conditioner, just FYI. We differ on that! 🙂
And I use hairspray as well, just some kind of extra-hold hairspray, due to the shortness of my hair and how easy it is for the overall shape to get deformed and look dumb when the wind kicks up!
Hope this helps!

Dash it all! We live a mere 40 minutes from Elm Grove, but have been away on vacation till today. Hope it went well and that you’ll be in the area again sometime.
