The “little of this, little of that” feature here at Like Mother, Like Daughter!
The giveaway is closed! Thanks for entering!
Another nerdy giveaway, below! Yes, books! But people, if we don't read good things and share them with others, we will be doomed to a life of manipulation by those who keep us in the shallows. Am I right??
Meanwhile, skip this part if you're not an obsessed crafter, I am doing some more stash-busting and making myself something, anything, to organize the many knitting needles I have somehow accumulated. (Not even talking about the single pointeds — those are in a mason jar on my desk.)
The issue right now is the circulars. They prevent the thing from closing up. Who knew that knitting represents this veritable explosion of paraphernalia? That every time you are trying to match a yarn with its needles you will be tossing double-pointeds over your shoulders in a vain attempt to find the ones — FOUR at least — that work for the gauge you are attempting? That you will be entangled in a snarl of coils with those blankety-blank circulars?
Working on the solution. Don't worry, the quilt is awaiting its backing and the hat and mitts are done. Pay no mind to the other crafts lined up and especially no mind at all to the bottomless depths of the stash.
More snow on the way… and the ice dams commence… but we'll make it, don't worry… God willing and the creek don't — and I am speaking literally here of the actual river downhill from me in case of a sudden thaw — rise.
On to our links!
- It's not bad to have an expert re-enforce what common sense will tell us: Too much information isn't good for children.
- Epic footage of a train in Canada going right through a LOT of snow. Fair warning, I think that only my grandsons Pippo or FX would be interested after about the 1:30 mark … but I think I need something like that here on the lane!
- Great interview with Cary Elwes on the making of The Princess Bride. A movie that is in a class of its own!
- Do the Crusades meet the criteria for just war? Yes, and then some.
- The Absurdity of Transgenderism by Carlos D. Flores. If you are confused about whether a person could be born the wrong “gender,” read this. Common sense again, and the need to have a reality check.
- I just finished The Spirit of the Liturgy by then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. Academic, yes, but also readable, particularly the second part, where he takes each aspect of the liturgy in turn: art, music, gesture, etc. This reflection by Msgr. Pope expresses much of what I've been pondering about the relationship between how we worship and how we do everything else. It does matter, and it's not all up for grabs.
- And to round out our nerdy time here together before the nerdy giveaway, I offer you (presuming of course that you are already an aficionado of Gilbert & Sullivan), I Am the Very Model of the Biblical Philologist! And you know what, I know more than one person who fits this bill!
- And from the archives: How to Avoid February Burnout Before it Starts!
~~~~~~~~~~
And onto our giveaway.
I have two books to give to one lucky reader.
Although they might seem a bit daunting, they are both highly readable and enjoyable!
Jonathan Witt and Jay W. Richards' The Hobbit Party: The Vision of Freedom That Tolkien Got, and the West Forgot just recently came to my attention. If you love The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit — and if you love thinking about what a good and just society would be like (the Shire, right?) — you will be so interested in this book.
The authors discuss all manner of subjects that fall generally under the idea of political philosophy — justice, the aim of government, just war, the relationship between private life and public life, freedom — through Tolkien's eyes as found in his works and letters. This is a wonderful way to think about big topics without approaching them in the typical, academic fashion — which is also wonderful, but for oneself, may require too much commitment in terms of reading; for someone else, it may require more interest than the person exhibits — yet, these things must be considered!
In order to live together and do right by each other, we simply have to ask important questions about freedom, individual responsibility, and power. A work of fiction can spark great conversations, and the authors provide a guide for those conversations with their knowledgeable analysis of Tolkien's works as well as the subjects they are examining. Many have been mistaken about what Tolkien actually thought about economics and war, imputing to him an even hippie or anarchic vision, where his was rather grounded, as the authors demonstrate, in Catholic social teaching.
I was particularly interested in the authors' discussion and critique of Distributism, as Tolkien is often lumped with Belloc and Chesterton — yet his view seems, although not unsympathetic especially to the latter, much more sophisticated than theirs.
And as a bonus, I'm also giving away this book by Anthony Esolen, which we've talked about before:
With Esolen's book providing the more straightforward framework for a robust discussion of political philosophy grounded in Scripture and Church teachings as well as natural law, these two books would make a really meaty study this Lent. I suggest one, the other, or both for your personal reading, your St. Gregory Pocket women's or couples' group, or your older teenager who has read and loved Tolkien and some Church documents, and is interested in a deeper — yet lively!– study.
What about a Lenten supper club? Meet once a week with a big pot of meatless soup, some homemade bread, and fruit. Take one chapter and have a great discussion!
So to enter to win these two books, Just leave a comment here on this post! If you share it on any of your social media, you get an extra entry! Just come back and comment again. We will close the giveaway (but not the comments) on Wednesday right before {pretty, happy, funny, real} posts at midnight.
~We’d like to be clear that, when we direct you to a site via one of our links, we’re not necessarily endorsing the whole site, but rather just referring you to the individual post in question (unless we state otherwise).~
Snakiegirl says
I have read good reviews for the Hobbit Party, and just finished watching Lord of the Rings, so this review made me want to get my hands on it even more! Also, thank you so much for your lovely blog – I discovered it about a year ago and I have enjoyed your advice on womanhood and homemaking, especially as a young adult. Thank you!
annie says
The books… They both look so great! I’m a grad student, and there are a number of dedicated Catholic students here that have been having early-morning book club meetings to discuss books about Catholic philosophy, the Good Life, etc. The Hobbit Party in particular would be perfect for next semester!
I shared on Facebook.
Good morning Aunt Leila! Oh how I would love to use both of these books for our Catholic Ladies group that is now meeting each week. We were formed out of a need to discuss just this! There are only 4 of us but it only takes a few to make change, correct?
Thank you for sharing so many good books on the blog! I already benefitted a lot from your recommendations (need to write to you about “The Red Horse”, just don’t manage to put together a mail that makes sense in English)! I would love these books, I already put them on my Amazon list.
Betsie Pendarvis says
I’m not sure how I missed The Hobbit Party, but would love to read both. I enjoyed Ratzinger’Ratzinger’s book when it came out. Thanks for the opportunity to win!
Jennifer G. Miller says
Thank you for the giveaway. I have had my eyes on Esolen’s book in particular. I love everything he writes.
I love your needle organizer! As far as the knitting needle organization, I have not found a good solution for circulars. I use them the most, and have quite a few. Now I mainly use interchangeables. I still keep mine in the packaging because I don’t like to have to remeasure the size and length every time I’m looking for a needle.
I don’t like the organizers that leave the cords hanging out looking like a tangled mess. Even if they aren’t, it visually is very ugly. I like the file organization like Namaste, or these two look like possibilities: https://www.flickr.com/photos/atelier_de_soyun/4116683805/
“I was particularly interested in the authors’ discussion and critique of Distributism, as Tolkien is often lumped with Belloc and Chesterton — yet his view seems, although not unsympathetic especially to the latter, much more sophisticated than theirs.” YES. And, may I say I had to sit down? Because I wasn’t expecting that at all, but I ended up really agreeing.
I love your blog and rely on your book reviews for a great read. Love The Hobbit but have never been able to finish LOTR. I seem to enjoy the more scholarly books about Tolkien.
One question that I have had for awhile is when referring to a Cardinal, is it correct to say, for example, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger as I have seen in some books or Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger? Perhaps both are correct. Anybody know?
Woman of the House says
Count me in for the giveaway. One of my favorite non-fiction books is Anthony Esolen’s Ten Ways to Destroy the Imagination of Your Child. And Tolkien is . . . Tolkien! Love him too!
Christina says
I want to win both of these Auntie Leila, or at least get them from the library. : ) Seems perfect reading for nursing a new baby. Is Benny too young for the Hobbit Party? Talk soon!
Leila says
Yes, Christina, I think that a 14 year-old might be too young, but soon he will be ready! I think that now he could re-read the LOTR and Hobbit, enjoy them, and in a year or two be ready to think about the questions raised. But you never know — if the questions come up now, maybe you can get started!
Karen says
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! And a Lenten supper club….. I love this idea…..
Jenny says
I’d love a copy of the books.
Kristi says
Would love the books. We enjoyed an earlier book by Jay Richards w/ Guillermo Gonzalez (astrophysicist) called The Privileged Planet — worth reading, too.
Amanda says
These books look just right for some Lenten reading. Thank you for the giveaway.
CMerie says
I look forward to bits and prices each week and this week was especially good. The crusades article was intriguing and I’m considering purchasing the book described in the article. I would love to be entered to win these two books!
Lorelei says
Books! Pick me! Pick me!
Claire says
I don’t need to be entered in the giveaway, but I just wanted make a knitting needle suggestion. I store my circulars in a binder, with each needle tucked into a page protector sheet. I went extra “fancy” and also put pretty scrapbook paper in the page protectors, and a number sticker in the corner of each one just to keep things in their proper slot, but that’s just extra. (FWIW, I use a small 7×9″ binder I found a Target, but a normal-sized one would work too.)
(Meanwhile, my DPNs and my straight needles still live jumbled up in a can with all the crochet hooks and a few stray pencils. Well, baby steps.)
Lori B says
I do the very same thing! I have a full-sized binder with a page protector for each size that I’ve simply marked with a sharpie. I like the idea of a pretty paper behind them 🙂
connie says
I would very much like to read both these book. They look thought provoking.
Mama Rachael says
yes, I’m very interested in those books!
Cheryl says
Thank you for the giveaway. I’ve never heard of the Hobbit Party book but I know it would be of great interest to my older kiddos who love The Hobbit.
Did you make your needle holder? I’ve been thinking of making/getting one as my needle stash is growing.:)
Leila says
Cheryl, I did — I finished it today! I will post about it next week, I think.
It looks great!!
Dianna says
What a lovely pair of books! And great articles, as always.
Betsy M says
Those books look wonderful. Thanks for the chance to win.
Nadine says
I have both of those books on my wish list.
And the knitting needle problem. Ours sit in a giant heap in an old tote bag until one of the family knitters goes frantically through the whole set. We were gifted an amazing amount from a friend who was clearing out her crafting supplies. That and a huge tub of yarn. It’s been a huge blessing.
Rebecca says
What a great giveaway! I’d love to win these.
Jacqueline says
I have been wanting to read the second book for a long time!
Mrs. Pickles says
For those who are interested in learning more about the Crusades (or know people who are history buffs), I also highly recommend “The Glory of the Crusades” by Steven Weidenkopf — not a provocative title at all. 🙂 I just heard Mr. Weidenkopf speak about it recently, and so Riley-Smith’s points all sounded very familiar — that the Crusades were seen by the Crusaders as a holy pilgrimage, taken at great personal loss for the love of the earthly Jerusalem and for the salvation of their souls. Really inspiring, actually. I got a copy for my Dad who is a huge history buff and he was so excited — he’d been looking for something like that for a while. It’s so important to inform ourselves of the truth so we can defend it when it is attacked in the public square. I was grateful for the article on transgenderism too — it’s so helpful to be able to articulate why we believe what we believe.
Now, to inform myself better on political philosophy and Catholic social teaching next! 🙂
Eireann says
Your needle organizer inspired me to make a paintbrush roll up last night! I would love to win and read these books! Thanks for the opportunity.
Margaret says
I’d love to read these!
Julie says
As always, lovely, fun and inspiring… Your blog hits all the right notes.
Marie says
These two books sound wonderful! Bits and Pieces is my favorite column each week.
Joy says
The books look great. I love your knitting needle organizer. Did you make it? If so, where did you find the pattern? I need to organize my needles.
Leila says
Joy, here I was in the process of making it. I kind of just made it up as I went! I finished yesterday afternoon. I will try to post on it.
Amy says
Anything by Esolen is worth reading… and nearly anything about hobbits as well! Thanks for making us aware of these.
Erin says
Oo, wonderful! I would love to read those books! But I would also like to know – how do you keep track of which DPNs are which size?
Leila says
Erin, that was the problem! The only way to “keep track” was to get out the needle sizer every time and identify 4 or 5 of the ones I wanted (or the circular). Some have the sizes on them — the bamboo ones — but it’s not always easy to read.
This way, they go in the keeper in order, left to right. Yay!
Erin says
Thanks! I think a needle organizer may be my next project (you know, after all those OTHER next projects)…
Robin says
Aaaaaah, the Biblical Philologist…I’m married to one! We both laughed out loud. And I would love to win those books!!!
Mama B says
Thank you Auntie Leila for this wise and wonderful blog! I am a devotee, in hiding (always read, never comment). It is not a reflection of a lack of gratitude, but simply a lack of time. XO.
Anne Marie says
Would love a peek at both these books.
Is the competition open to non-Americans? That is South Africans?
Ruth Anne says
Ruth says
I would love to better understand Catholic social teaching. There are so many confusing, conflicting voices out there. But even more, I want to say, I recently found out you will be speaking at the Homeschool Conference in my state this spring, and I am SO EXCITED! I’ve been a quiet reader here for years and your blog is just the inspiration I need. Thank you!
Sue K says
I’m particularly interested in the Esolen book, but both look great! Thanks for the chance to win.
Colette says
As awesome as winning a book would be, I think winning a knitting needle case made from your stash would be super cool, too 😉 Making a needle case has been on my to-do list for way too long now. Looking forward to your post about it!
Donna L. says
I would love to win one of these books–yes, please!
I think I would *buy* one of your clever organizers for my kids….art supplies, crochet hooks and ? Such a great way to put things away! Then you could use up more of your stash!
Great idea about the furniture fix…way to go!
Sara says
Both of those books look great; we’re big Hobbit fans here.
I have two separate needle holders (that my daughter made for her sewing badge) for dpns and circs. The one for circs has wider pockets and rolls up awkwardly, but it works. I’ve been trying to find the time to make a hanging one, but there’s very little drive when you already have one that does the job….
Claudia says
Although I would love to win these books, what I’d really like to have won is your Oratory book! I have a canon law son and daughter-in-law who homeschools and they, plus my husband and I, would love to read these books.
As a winner of anything whatsoever, I am more than willing to share the wealth!
Thank you for your delightful blog entries and your lovely photography.
A Catholic artist, a mother, a grandmother, and a true fan!
Becca A. says
I wouldn’t mind a few more books in my home! The article about too much information really struck a chord with me. My children are very young and I have to fight the whisperings that I’m trying to shelter them away from all life but childhood and innocence should be sacred and protected!
Doris says
Thanks for the chance to win! I would love these books. 😀
Faith says
I’ve become interested in political philosophy lately, and these books seem love they’d be a great place to start!
Logan says
More on the fascinating subject of circ needle storage. I inherited from my grandmother these handy quilted books for storing circulars. Do they make these anymore–the lable on the inside says “carry-alls”? It folds up into a small little package about 10″/4″ about 2-3″ deep. When you unfold it there are eight sturdy plastic pockets bound inside that you can slip the whole circular into. I think each sleeve can hold about three. I just mark the different sizes on the outside of the pockets in sharpie. I think they are perfect! It’s both attractive (with charming old-fashioned quilted exterior) and functional.
MRS MILLER says
Thanks for the great give-a-way! Your link for the article on transgender issues was so very timely and spot on!
I’ll have to show the train video to my husband. Thanks for the giveaway!
Alicia says
I think – but am not sure – that I’m just inside the give away window. And the only brain space I can spare for big ideas in this season of life requires just the kind of approach that the Tolkien book seems to adopt.
