It doesn't feel like fall yet to this New England girl (although, goodness gracious, does 99 degrees feel like fall to anyone?), but we've had a few cooler days that are making me itch for the weather to change for real. This fairytale spot is on a little nature walk near our house that's perfect for us — a flat, wide path for Molly to toddle along, but still lots of good exploring for Pippo to do.
{happy}
Pippo's excitement meter went through the roof when he got to camp out in the backyard this weekend. Molly and I helped the boys set up, but then we retired to our cozy beds while they got to enjoy s'mores by the fire and sleeping bags on the hard ground.
(Please note/ignore the oh-so-classy overturned plastic chair in the background.)
As you might imagine, there was not quite as much sleeping as one might hope, and after a restless night they finally retreated inside when our neighbor's rooster started crowing at around 5am. (Have I mentioned that our neighbors recently acquired a rooster? Who crows at all hours and half the time sounds just like a child calling me from the other room? I am not a fan.)
In other words, it was a huge success, and Pippo can't wait to do it again.
{funny}
These kiddos were enjoying their Second Breakfast of pancakes at their little table while I cleaned up the kitchen, and Molly was convinced that Pippo's pancakes were tastier than hers. In case you couldn't tell, he thought it was just hilarious.
These two crack me up.
{real}
I heard “Hmm… not very comf-terble…” coming from the living room several times in a row, in that way that really means, “Mom, I need you to fix something for me.”
There wasn't much I could do, though. I'm not sure how comfortable he expected the empty train bin to be.

Such an adorable little duo. They remind me of my oldest two. Does your city allow roosters? Ours will allow chickens, but not roosters because of the noise.
Katherine says
Our city has a noise ordinance, but somehow a neighbor still snuck a rooster in there. We also have an incessantly barking dog. I think they tag team: “You tired of making noise? Go take a nap! I’ll take over for the next two hours.” Argh.
Rosie says
To be honest, I don’t know if roosters are allowed. They might not be. But we do have very good neighbors, and I wouldn’t want to make a fuss over their (admittedly, rather obnoxious) rooster.
But that doesn’t mean I can’t occasionally dream about tossing a raccoon over their fence and letting nature take its course! 🙂
Annie says
Lovely! I have a child who has always loved crawling into small spaces– stew pots, toy bins, laundry baskets. It always makes me laugh.
Dixie says
We got rid of the rooster we had when I was a kid when my dad discovered a houseguest of ours filling a bucket from the pool in order to “drown that *darn* rooster.”
I wouldn’t recommend drowning roosters for keeping up neighborly goodwill, of course! But, still…
Dixie says
(He didn’t drown it — we gave it to someone with more acreage.)
Rosie says
Haha… another neighbor of ours has (in the rooster-owning neighbor’s presence) threatened to cook it for dinner!

I know what you mean about fall. It is my favorite time of year and I am afraid we aren’t going to have one. The weather has been so warm that our AC is still kicking on. I am truly afraid that one weekend all the leaves will turn and fall and that will be it!

The kids are just too adorable, and we love camping – I mean, we get frustrated and dirty, and worn out and then we do it all over again because despite all that we really do love it.

Molly is adorable, her little face made my day–especially when she was laughing at her brother in the train bin. 🙂

I love seeing them! and I am VERY impressed that Capt. P is willing to camp out, roughing it on the hard ground etc, considering that the shoemaker’s child often goes unshod!
Melanie says
They are so cute together! It’s so fun when they start enjoying each other.
Julie says
Have you read the wonderful Shirley Hughes story in which Alfie and his dad go camping in the backyard and they are disturbed by a pig? Molly & Pippo remind me so much of Alfie and Annie Rose!
Rosie says
That looks so cute! I’ll check it out – thanks!

ohmygoodness, the photos of the kids and the pancakes absolutely made my day! The photo of Pippo in the box was the icing on the cake. 🙂 So cute!!!

Thank you for hosting!!
My husband and son have discussed the backyard camping adventure but haven’t done it yet. Our climate is now too chilly for it…..but if we get a heat wave they might still be able to pull it off.
I especially love the photos of the children and their Hobbit-esque Second Breakfast. One of my greatest joys in life is watching my children enjoy each other!
Jennie C. says
Why do kids love to climb into tiny boxes?! Mine line ’em with couch pillows first, though. Makes them more “comf-terble”. I love how those two love each other. Happy family!
Jennie C. says
Oh, and you learn to tune the roosters out after a while. We’ve got roosters, and our neighbors have roosters, and they have crowing competitions whenever they feel like it! I hardly even notice any more, but we do live in the country where roosters are expected. 🙂
Jennifer Wolf says
This is my first link up! Thanks for including me. Love the camping pictures! I will have to include some pancakes after we do our camp out – it looks so yummy!

Ha — my children have hobbit stomachs, too!
