I had some other contented pictures to show you of my weedy garden and my decidedly UN-weedy brick walk (which is all of six feet long or some such very short length and takes two people a heck of a long time to weed, so yes, deserved some pictures of its own), but then I remembered that just before posting time here would be Big Truck Night in our town!
Hooray for pictures of Big Trucks! And little animals, because there must be something to enchant the 18-month-old baby sisters and generally soften the atmosphere, which gets strong with claxons and flashing lights and massive wheels that dwarf the largest toddler.
Our town, which has horses and apples and quite a bit of corn, also has trucks galore, for some reason. One day long ago the town manager got the bright idea to make the truck people bring their Big Trucks over to the town hall green and show us what they can do — and Voila! So. Much. Fun.
The Chief and I loooooove Big Truck Night. But we have to import children for it. (Last year it got rained out, which is why I didn’t have anything about it.)

The last couple of summers there has been ALL SORTS of major construction in our usually quiet neighbourhood and you’d think it would be a nightmare but basically for the kids it’s been heaven. We just sit on the curb a safe (?) distance away and watch the big trucks with wide eyes and open mouths. What a wise Town Manager you have.
I personally would love to see that digger lifted off the ground! What a fun time.
I hope you’re going to post your brick sidewalk soon – I would love some garden/house project encouragement and inspiration.

Well, there’s that one of Annie! She’s happy, even toting a little oven around in the 90 degree heat!
I love that picture of her with her crew…what a simple example of how much our world needs these littles! “We have to show off our gigantic trucks and roosters!”

Are there safety regulations about hard hats, steel-capped boots, safety zones etc, around lifting equipment like that? !

How fun! I received The Little Oratory today. It’s way, way bigger than I expected and there are already so many surprises. I am delighted! Funny, I went to GoodWill today on my lunch break and bought a couple of little shelves, some candles and a nice framed print of Jesus. I even thought to myself, “there are some altars in the making.” Then I got home to your book! And it’s the weekend! I am so happy and can not wait to get settled in with The Little Oratory and then to bring these sacred images into my home. Thank you!
Our (small) city began “Touch the Trucks” a number of years ago. I took our boys to the first one, probably when they were 5 and 7. It was a bunch of city employees standing next to their city trucks, feeling totally self- conscious and clearly wishing they were anywhere else. Well, that’s how they were at the start, anyway. A few hours later, after being regarded as superheroes by an endless stream of admiring children, those men were standing tall, proud of their trucks, proud of their jobs, and full of new-found self-respect. We certainly had a blast climbing all over the trucks and asking tons of questions, but it was the difference in the city employees that I remember the most.
Big Truck Night! What a great idea! It looks like everyone had a great time. :)
I found out today that there was a “touch a truck” event here this weekend. Many of my students went. Such a wonderful idea.
