Thanks to the kids' wonderful Aunt Natasha, and through no virtue or effort of my own, I had two adorable costumes all ready to go for my little munchkins. We ended up not doing any trick-or-treating of our own at all, since we realized sort of at the last minute that we needed to go to the Vigil Mass for the Feast of All Saints since Captain Pepper couldn't make it to any of the ones today.
Our neighbors all had their lights off anyway, though one of them brought by some candy for the kids. He said there was one bag for each of them, and since Molly's too little, Pippo can eat hers too, and tell her how much fun her first Halloween was. We have good neighbors.
For her first Halloween, Molly was a Ferocious Lion.
This lion outfit is a hand-me-down from Pippo (who received it as a gift from Nick and Natasha). Here he is, on the left, modeling it before our trip to Massachusetts when he was just a few weeks younger than Molly is now (on the right).
Don't you just want to squeeze their little bellies? Or is that just me?
This year, Pippo was a Ferocious Dinosaur — again, thanks to an impossibly cute gift from his godmother.
Now, he's naturally a bit costume-averse, and it took a bit of cajoling and bribing to put it on. But the fact that it's just a jacket rather than an ensemble — and that it's awesome — won him over. Now he doesn't want to take it off.
I'm actually sort of ok with that. It is impossibly cute, after all, and it's a pretty beautiful little (wool!) coat.
This is how a dinosaur crawls around. |
And this is how a dinosaur comforts his little sister. |
We didn't get many trick-or-treaters, though those we did get came by the trailerful — a pickup truck pulling an actual trailer full of costumed kids. I'd never seen that before!
Any remaining doubts Pippo had about Halloween were allayed by the large bowl of candy by the door, and especially by my surprising lack of concern over how much of it he ate. He's concluded it's a pretty fun day.

That dinosaur/dragon coat is to DIE FOR.
I have become a big believer in home-grown costumes, or at least ones made from multiple parts. My kids are much more excited for them, and they get a second life, either as “regular” clothes with a twist, or to fill out the dress-up box.

That is so fun. My friend's little boy had a very similar dragon costume/coat when he was Pippo's age and he wore it all year.

I never thought, as I went through those busy years. that I'd say this: I miss my little children! And, happily looking forward, someday, to grandchildren. Adorable!! Thanks for sharing.
