From The Art of Manliness – see link below |
- I'll start off with the post from which the above photo was taken: Quotations on manliness and what it means to be a man from The Art of Manliness. There's a lot to take in – over 80 thoughtful and thought-provoking quotations! Maybe they'll help you inspire the men in your life or help you determine what sort of man you're looking for.
- I chose to highlight that C.S. Lewis quotation (above) since, a little over a year ago, Auntie Leila wrote a post inspired by that very line.
- For some color-related fun, check out these cool links at Apartment Therapy: Test Yourself: Color Quizzes. I didn't do all of them, but I poked around a bit. I can tell you that the color personality one isn't too impressive (it seems to think I'm “brown” because I'm “straight-forward” and “have a passive personality.” Ha! Nope.). My favorite was the color acuity test — now I'm anxious to see how I stack against The Artist! Anyway, I'm one of those people who never gets tired of online quizzes.
- The Creation of a Spiritual Portrait. Walking us through the process of painting an icon. This nice collection of student work from David Clayton's course in Kansas this past summer shows the inspiration of the St. Alban's school — icons from an Anglican tradition.
- Married ladies schooling your kids at home: Does your husband need the HMUT to understand you for real?
- A bit of a surprise coming from the WaPo, this article by a Jesuit priest is on 10 Ways to Revitalize the Catholic Church (specifically, in America). I love his point about priests wearing their clerical garb; I've heard stories about priests being stopped in the streets to hear Confessions – who would want to miss an opportunity like that?!
- Another great priest-sourced piece (and appropriate for the manliness theme today) is this interview with Fr. Paul Check who directs the Courage Ministry. Homosexuality, Identity, and the Grace of Chastity. This man is so obviously loving and wise!
- And just for kicks, if you are a fan of Monty Python, you should check out this trailer, which is both a hilarious homage to a classic and an excellent example of how, when promoting a movie, it's all about the editing and the soundtrack! (Previews can truly be deceptive!)

I love those redone trailers! Have you seen the one for The shining and the one for Mary Poppins? Hysterical!

The funny thing about The Art of Manliness choosing that C.S. Lewis quote is that when he talks about men without chests in The Abolition of Man, as far as I remember, he's not talking about what it means to be a man, but about what it means to be human.
_Leila says
Lorraine, well, yes and no. Of course men and women need fruitfulness and fortitude. But you don't castrate a young woman…
The imagery is male. I suspect this has something to do ultimately with the truth that woman's nature is to be responsive. If men in particular have no chests (lack fortitude and the ability to act for the good), then “man” in general — all of humanity — suffers.
In any case, men are humans too 🙂

I think you mean clerics, not vestments. I'm pretty sure vestments are only supposed to be worn inside the sanctuary. Interesting article about how to revitalize the Church – most media outlets love all the stuff Pope Francis saying these days and so are printing more like-minded things. We must pray and fast for our Holy Father as Our Lady asked. I enjoy these Saturday posts – thanks so much!

Oh, that trailer is funny. Still chuckling minutes later.

Thanks for posting the C.S. Lewis quote about “men without chests”, this is a big problem, I believe.
I have read most of his books, he was a true man, and even a wounded war hero.
