The weekly “little of this, little of that” feature at Like Mother, Like Daughter!
When Auntie Leila was here to provide pre-postpartum support, she made this tasty yogurt cake (among other things).
The recipe calls for apples, but this particular version incorporated peaches (she was very excited about the wonderful quality of the peaches here “down south,”). She tells me that later she made it with leavening, and that it kept a bit better that way — not that it's the type of food that really needs to “keep,” if you catch my drift. To be honest (and I did tell her this, accompanied by appropriate gratitude), I think I would have preferred using a different fruit, simply because I feel there is no way to improve upon raw July peaches.
This week's links!
- In case you needed a little convincing to join a choir or have your child join a choir (of course we love the idea of being part of a church choir), here's a little article recommending the practice. Without needing to reference any studies or “experts,” we all know that singing in a good choir is fun; that it's a great, constructive activity; that providing church music is a laudable endeavor (provided that the music is good); and that music is, indeed, the stuff of life. But it's still fun to learn a little about how Singing Changes Your Brain.
- Ever think about the items in our lives that are basically the same as they ever were and have needed no innovation? 8 Inventions that Never Needed Updating.
- On the other side of that coin, there are some very clever new inventions: 24 Household Items You Won't Believe You Don't Own Yet. (Actually, it's very easy to believe that I don't own some of these… but I admit that numbers 2 and 23 strike me as brilliant.)
- If you're an introvert, you were probably enjoying the preponderance of introvert-oriented articles buzzing around recently. And we extroverts don't begrudge you them. But then we also find this little rebuttal pretty funny (with nothing but love for the introverts among us, of course – all in good fun).
- For this week's more thought-provoking selection, I recommend The Problem With Youth Ministry. BadCatholic presents a clear and strong argument about teaching authority – actually the best argument I've ever read for why parents are primary educators, particularly of faith. “If our modern youth ministry is truly Catholic, it will work towards its own demise.”
Have a great weekend!
