Yesterday was ridiculous.
Thursday we had nice visits from friends, one of which necessitated some creative seating arrangements. (And, of course, faces from me as I express myself with my usual gusto.)
Friends are nice.
And then Bridget got up and moved around so very well. Every single person who works in that hospital is encouraging and wonderful and kind.
Sukie had spent the night with her, on account of Sukie being a trouper and Bridget needing her to finish a movie with her (she loves watching movies with her sisters), but it being too late to wait to the end of the movie and then drive the hour home.
So I left. Sukie takes care of us.
Yesterday morning I ran out of the house (knowing that the discharge would take all day, but wanting to be there for the surgeon's visit) without my camera cord or an additional skein of yarn. I had thought all along that Sukie would be the one to go home, and had spoken to her and even sent her an email to remind her to bring me another skein without fail. Of course, I didn't email myself.
Ugh. The inefficiency.
No posting, no knitting. That yarn kept getting shorter and shorter and then… it was done. And I couldn't even tell you about it.
Of course they discharged us at exactly, but exactly, 5 pm. On a Friday. In Boston. My husband was trying to encourage us to stay an extra hour or two, because what's the point in sitting in traffic. Well, yes, but what is the point of sitting in the hospital? At some point you make one of those cost/benefit analyses, check the traffic report, weigh your options, and go.
It wasn't so bad after all, I mean, it was bad, but we weren't in that ROOM — and then we were home!
{To those of you who spend lots of time in hospitals taking care of your dear ones, I salute you. Of course, we just do what we have to do.}
The nausea comes and goes.
She got up to have a lovely bath (I guess the Jacuzzi comes in handy once a decade, after all), being careful not to get the back of her head wet but appreciating getting the front clean, and here she is talking to Nick in Hong Kong.
Yes, it really is this cold here.
Soon I'll fix her hair, and hopefully she'll be able to eat something! We're on the road to recovery! With a good guard-nurse!
Nadja says
I am so glad the worst is behind her. Here is hoping that she will be pain and nausea-free soon!

Hooray! Hooray! No joy like finally getting out of the hospital! We've done our time in our local children's hospital, and I'm so glad you had a good experience.
Prayers for a quick and successful recovery!

My prayers for her continued recovery. I hope this just takes care of her previous difficulties forever and ever, and that she never sees the inside of another hospital room, unless it involves childbirth!
Valerie says
Prayers for Bridget's swift recovery – and good wishes to you and all your family, and my thanks to you for this beautiful, welcoming blog. From New Zealand.
Dyan says
Wonderful news. As far as the yarn goes, it sure does go quickly once you get close to the end of the skein, doesn't it? I'm so glad to hear that she is home. I will pray for her continued recovery.
Betty says
Perhaps if you were super, super sensitive to it, you just felt the tiniest little draft around your ankles, which would have been from the big sigh of relief from here in VA! Thank God, and we will continue our prayers for a smooth recovery. 🙂
Raeanna says
So happy to see her recovering!

Quilts and knitting family members – all the comforts of home (almost) Glad she is doing so well!(Is that an egg-sized strawberry?)
Leila says
Yes, Lisa, it pretty much is! Small egg (she said she wouldn't be able to eat much) and huge strawberry!
Lindsey in AL says
Welcome home, Bridget! You are so blessed to be taken care of by such a family. I kind of envy y'all your cold. I could do with a little cold, but I'm sure you'd prefer something a little warmer. We have that plate! Actually, I think we have one salad size one and two saucers. We used to have a cup too but it's gone. I love those dishes!
Dusa says
Soooo glad all is well! And I can vouch for the chilly NE weather in case anyone doubts you!

It's been too long since I've checked in here and my heart raced a bit when I saw your youngest in a hospital gown… I hope she is recovering well. It must have been a humbling experience for your whole family. She is a lucky girl to be surrounded by so many who love her, I love the sweetness of watching movies with her sisters.
priest's wife says
about movies with sisters: I was thinking & blogging a bit about favorite movies- I realized that they were ALL movies I had seen with sisters, so I had to add a few not-so-favorites watched without them to balance it out…it is a good day for surgeries- my mother's thyroid surgery went splendidly

Oh, bless her heart. I'm so glad she's doing well. Even for us nurses, hospitals get a little old after a while.
Mary says
So happy she is home and resting comfortably. One of the best feelings in the world is to leave the hospital under your own power. We will continue to pray for Bridget continued recovery and for Nurse Sukie to get some rest. there are many more movies to watch in the coming weeks. LOL!
Mrs Bossy says

I got my back operated on (and was not able to do anything for myself for the duration of my hospital stay) and I cannot tell you what a blessing it was to have my mother there. She fed me. She washed my hair. I can see the love for Bridget in those pictures. It's a beautiful thing.
Rachael says
I remember my mom coming home from the hospital and when I just came home after the c-section with this baby (just 5 1/2 weeks ago!). Coming home is such a good feeling, and Mom always did better once home. I think I did better once home, as well.
Welcome home, Bridget!

Well, that hospital room looked very cozy thanks to Mom!! What a good idea bringing in things from home to add comfort to the sick.Like some others, I am jealous of the cold weather too. It is in the 90's again today, and probably will be for 2 more months. I might be sorry I asked, but exactly how cool is it there? I am bracing for your answer…
regan says

Oh HOW WONDERFUL! Of all the things that possibly COULD have happened (and I'm sure you entertained them all….) it looks like a good ending! On an unrelated note, I adore Rosie's high-chair.

Love the toast strips and the soft boiled egg in its cup! Love your remark about Suki taking care of everyone…is she the eldest? She sounds like our eldest of 8 (Lorna…she may be the shortest but you'd better do what she says!).Also, I heard your pain when you left the house without the needed skein of yarn….frustrating…especially because I am sure you planned and thought ahead. So glad Deidre is home and under a comforting quilt!Prayers from Washington state lofting your way;)Jill Farris

I spent two months in the hospital with my dad, he then went home for five days, and then home to be with the Lord. We settled into a routine, I knew all the doctors as we survived three rotations. I am so glad that your dear one and you are doing well. She looks so peaceful with her cup of tea. Mom's couch is comfort to me.
