You know that I don't usually get into news here. I don't even watch the news on TV. It just happened one night a while ago that I was searching for updates about the storm we were in for, that I came across this story.
I just had to share this with you, because we were talking about boys and I just love these boys.
As you watch, note a few things to indulge me in this strange love I have for this video.
- Steven is shown at the beginning of the clip playing with his siblings and dog. He is unfazed by the presence of a camera and reporter, evidently. He's a little boy and he does little boy things!
- Both boys are so cute. They have no self-consciousness whatsoever, and David, the boy who saved Steven, thinks it's hilarious that his classmates called him a hero. I love when he says, “They said to only use it [the Heimlich] in an emergency…I thought that that was an emergency.” Yes, indeed.
- Both boys have a fresh look about them, speak well, and are completely without that un-childlike smug pertness that infects some kids, especially smart ones.
- Steven's parents give David an entirely appropriately modest gift for his actions, avoiding anything that would detract from his achievement in learning a life-saving technique and applying it at the right time.
- David spent his money on Legos, not video games! How cute is that. And his parents made him his favorite dinner to show him their love. That's what I do too.
- They are now friends.

That is all.

Wow, what a great story!
My son would also spend any gift money on Legos instead of video games, and even the video games he has (2) are Lego video games!
Speaking of video games, according to my son we are the ONLY family he knows where video game time is limited. We don't have any sort of game system, like a Wii, so he plays his video games on the computer. He gets one hour of computer time per day and can only have that time AFTER he practices piano. I'm sure we aren't the ONLY family who limits video game time, but we must be in the minority around here. I think that's sad.

Wow. We have lots of game systems, but our children are 2 years and 1 month, respectively… so we haven't really gotten much into PLAYING games yet, much less limiting them. We have a sort of implicit limit for our 2-year-old for games and for TV. When she gets older, it will be explicit.

Let your son know that he isn't the only one. My 11 year old does have a DS, which he just got last year, but no other gaming systems and he too is limited to 1 hour per day of DS, computer time (he loves the Lego website!) or TV. We do not have any other gaming systems and he is convinced he is the only kid without a Wii.
Those two boys were such a treat to watch. They seem like great boys. I am going to show the video to my son tomorrow.

What cute boys! You are right, they seem just as young and old as they should be.
And the “hero” used the word, “spat”! And correctly! That really impressed me, I must say.
Thanks for the heartwarming link.
