Oh, there must be pictures! These are all taken by Rosie and Philip, because I'm not there but rather here, jumping out of my skin in anticipation of going there and getting this little bundle in my very own arms.
Thanks for all the wonderful well wishes you kind people have left! I knew you would want more information — sorry for being tardy. Photos are really the delight and bane of existence, aren't they? I can't wait to see them, but downloading and uploading and printing and organizing, ai-yi-yi.
Philip Edward Turner, “property of US Navy”, 8lbs 4oz, 21″ |
So, sorry. Anyway, I'm so proud of these guys. They did wonderfully well with first-time labor and delivery. Rosie made it through with no drugs. She says a) that there will not be a next time since neither of them wants to be near a laboring woman again, and b) next time she will get the full array of drugs and compare the experiences.
{joke}
Baby did very well other than dealing with what sounds like the overly concerned interference of a nurse who detected the undetectable and caused a temporary separation of parents and child. I could put that less charitably but choose to preserve a rational and detached demeanor for future transgressions by the medical profession.
Doctors could not locate the invisible respiratory issues and soon returned baby to mother. A wearying extra-long stay in the hospital was the result, but all in all, other than a certain exhaustion all round, no long-term effects resulted, thank goodness. (The process of checking vital signs while impeding them should be reconsidered, but I'm not in charge.)
A little crafty exhibition here:
And Natasha made the lovely blanket on many a transcontinental flight.
This is the extra small cap! He'll have to grow into it. His head is quite large — Rosie overheard the staff discussing it in the hallway. Such is the legacy her father left her.
More craftiness: Habou's crotcheted blanket, “for my first great-grandson!”
Good work, Rosie, getting all the needlework in your baby's life right away!
The title of this portrait is “The Indignity of Being an Infant.”
This is where I pull that accordion photo album out of my bag and brandish it before your glazed eyes (but really, the sweetness!! Don't run away! Just a few more! I have more!):
Rosie says, “The baby needs something to look at? Let's hang an ornament from the swiffer handle, and then balance it off the coffee table over his head!”
The unsanitariness of it all. Plus, he's not looking at it, at least as depicted here. But if he could see his shirt he could learn his ABCs.
Don't you love how irrational people get when it comes to babies? Like newborn booties with non-slip soles? Hm? For safety? Or how about the cards you get that say, “It's a BOY!” Um, yeah, I did notice that. But thanks. I'll call you if I need to count his fingers and toes. You seem very perceptive.
Love!

Oh.my.goodness. The picture of him puckering his little lips (when laying on Rosie) is too much! He is adorable. As we say here in the South, “I could just eat him up with a spoon…”
Melanie B says
I looked at every single one. Twice. Because who can ever get enough of baby sweetness? Congratulations again and thank you for sharing all the pics.

Just you wait until you get your hands on him! My first grandchild was born last May. I met her when she was 2 weeks old (the military dragged them far from Texas 🙁 ) It is amazing! Watching your child parent is mind-boggling. I'm so proud and you will be, too.
Philip Edward is absolutely gorgeous. Congratulations to your whole family!

All I can think is, “they'll never be the same…” I was so astounded at how much love has abounded in our house with each baby. What a blessing, and how precious! And how I wish we had started earlier, so that we could have more.
Learning to Let Go says
Wonderful! I also had to go back and look at every single picture again. We'll be waiting for more. And he is truly beautiful!

My 21 month old little girl says, “Little baby cute!” Followed by “More more little baby!” 🙂 He is precious. I hope that you get to snuggle him very soon!

ahh. Lovely. The newness of baby, and the newness of adults just starting out on being parents. Blessings on you all.
Barbara says
Oh Leila (and Rosie!), he is just too precious. And I bet he smells just as good. Yum! So glad everything is going peachy.
Sorry for the medical over-reaction but we just had the opposite situation in our family. At the hospital, no one noticed baby was have pauses in breathing (curse rooming in) and new parents took her home, only to find out a week later that she had aspirated meconium, was infected, and will now be on oxygen and monitors for at least six months. Better too cautious than oblivious! Besides you have many, many years to enjoy his beautiful presence!

So sweet and cute it hurts! I can't imagine the emotion you must feel seeing the first child from one of your own children and how badly you must want to scoop his little swaddled baby-ness right out of the photos. Congratulations to you Leila! As a mother you are the best of the best and I am happy to read on and hear from you what being a Grandmother is all about….and use lots of pictures!
Kris says
Oh my goodness!!
I have a 7 month old and these pictures are making me baby hungry again! It must be the sleep deprivation. He is just adorable!

Lovely. He is beautiful!! I do know how you feel as we, too, have a newborn in our midst. I love the southern expression..”eat them with a spoon”..a big one please. Pictures are wonderful but not enough (esp for grandma)
Love to all and God bless you real good.

I am so glad that I am not to close or I would be grabbing the cute little fellow and hugging the stuffings out of him. He is sooo cute.

These are so wonderful!! He looks a little like Mr. Magoo with his wrinkly sweetness! Love the video game picture!. My guys were doing the same thing this Christmas but alas I have no wee one to bundle. Maybe one day God will see fit to make me a Grandmother…in His time!
Blessings and Grace to you and yours…Congratulations to you both ladies! Family rocks!

Maybe it's silly to be tearing up over photos of a family I've never even met but these are beautiful! Babies and weddings seem to have that effect on me no matter whose they are! My sister is expecting a new baby in just a few weeks and these shots have only whetted my appetite!
Congratulations to the entire clan!

1- good job Rosie on going drug free! Proud of you!
2- That squishy cheek picture totally made me laugh!! You're right. The indignity of it all.
3- The husband playing his video game is a total crack up too! I have some mamas in my class who'd find that very funny.
Congratulations!

oh Leila! I can't get tired of baby pictures! And first time grandmothers are amazing too. I was surprised by how fun and joyful it was to watch my parents step into the grandparenting role. God-breathed. May you get to hold your sweet little boy SOON.

Wonderful pictures and good job Rosie for managing a drug free labor! Tell her that she'll forget all about it by the time the next one arrives. Mommy amnesia is a beautiful thing.
I love that photo of her hubby playing the game with the napping infant. My husband does stuff like that with his ipod, checking e-mail and reading the NY Times. Why is it that men can multi-task on the things that are truly unhelpful? ha ha.
Best wishes to you and your family! Congratulations on a beautiful boy!

Leila,
Darling pudgy little baby boy…wow he looks like a firm little chunk of love! Loved your comments and excitement…I teared up a bit. My son just got engaged to his beautiful girlfriend so grandbabies may actually be on the horizon for us!
Hope you get to hold him soon.
Jill F.
ps. I have both a Phillip and a Rosie among my children so I feel especially close to the new parents:)

Congratulations Leila, I love your blog and forward your great advice to my friends and family all the time!
My mom often tells people that becoming a grandmother makes you completely insane at first. She would ask people if they wanted to see pictures of my first born and before they could say yes she was shoving a whole book in front of their face : ) Now that she has 8 grandchildren she is much better and says she is back to normal…only now she compares stats with other grandmothers, you know whoever has the most grandchildren wins 🙂
Your new baby is just beautiful, much love to all!
Deirdre says
My mom has actually been really good so far. At first I was thinking, “Wow, she's turning out to be such an even-keeled Grandma!”
But then we went to a few Christmas parties and oh yeah, she was not wasting time whipping out photos! haha — it's been very cute.
Tracy says
Oh. My. This precious post on your new grandbaby was so delightful. And funny. But oh,I can't believe what great and adorable pictures they had of that baby. Makes me want another one and this time, take some good pictures! Those first few months are so very wonderful.

So cute! Makes me even more impatient for my little one (#2, due any day now) to get here!
Also, we have several pictures of my husband playing video games with baby #1 asleep on his lap. Nowadays, she will often ask to sit on his lap and play toddler computer games (thank you, kneebouncers.com and sesamestreet.org) while he plays on the Xbox. Training them up right! 😉

Hello, I'm a faithful reader for about 6 months – short-timer, really. I love your blog, love your photos and your viewpoint on life. And I LOVE all the photos of this darling baby boy. I have always had a soft spot for Grandma's with those according booklets of pictures of the grand-baby. Thank you for sharing with us – he is really a sweetheart. My hat is off to your daughter – good job! Your readers love you and your family – as another blogger I read says “all is grace”. God bless!
Michelle says
Congratulations to you and your family! What a beautiful blessing! I know you are very, proud, happy, excited, and eager new Grandmother! He is a beautiful baby and his pictures are wonderful. I love the squished cheeks picture. Enjoy that new baby and I hope you get to see him in person real soon. Actually surprised you aren't there already. 😉
Emccll says
You are a supremely patient woman. I would have no self control, no respect for the new family 'togetherness' adjustment time, no thought other than “I MUST BE THERE!”
Thank you for your strength in patiently waiting your turn to scoop up that gorgeous miracle.
Ha zahh! (I salute you)
Rochelle says
Precious!
Congratulations to both you (Leila) and Rosie! What a blessing. Just snuggle up all that sweet baby goodness.
As to a drug-free birth ~ awesome! Way to go Rosie. After my first I thought the next morning “Oh, now I can see why some women get epidurals.” 🙂 Did I get one with baby #2? Nope…and he came about 10 times faster than the first….the joy of (some) subsequent births. Hang in there and really baby yourself these coming weeks…having a baby (and nursing) is so exhausting.
So happy for you all! You're making me hope for #3 before the end of this year…
PS: Go UVA! (from a UVA Law wife) 🙂
Tamie says
He is precious!! Thanks for all the pictures! 🙂 Enjoy!

When my youngest was born, my then 17 yr old son did that same fish face to him all the time. When he did it, he always called him Hubert; that was his Hubert face. Right before Christmas of that yr, I was in Toys R Us, and I was looking at this gorgeous stuffed bear. It was soooo soft and cute. I flipped over the tag to see the price, and lo and behold! the bear's name tag said Hubert!! I called my 17 yr old, and he begged me to buy it for the baby. Well, the baby is now about to turn 4, and he sleeps with Hubert every night!! Hubert is practically a member of the family! Thanks for sharing such adorable photos!!
