This past weekend I cut my own hair out of desperation. Usually one of the big girls cuts it, but they are not here and it really needed to be done. Would you like to see a picture?
This is the best I could do for a photo. NB: that is not my wedding ring. My wedding ring is TOO SMALL. (So is my engagement ring.)
And since it's not just a gold band it can't be enlarged (or at least that's what I've been told — if anyone has any experience enlarging an embellished eternity band, let me know!). (By embellished I mean it's an eternity band set with rubies and flanked on either side with a delicate rope of gold. Lovely, but too small. I started to feel like my finger was suffocating!). Soon I will figure out a new wedding ring.
So I wear this other (very nice but not particularly nuptial) ring just so people will know I'm married, even if they also think I don't have a lovely gold and ruby ring, and a diamond.
Then Chief wanted to bottle his beer. I wish I was foresighted enough to have taken pictures for the whole process, because another weekend project was making spent grain bread, and I know you would all be interested in every step of this lengthy journey.
First (well, not first. First you brew the beer. That's what I don't have pictures of) you have to wash the bottles, or your beer will not be good. It will be gross. Now, these bottles from the last batch have been stored out in the garage in a box.
They were fairly clean when they got in the box, but imagination alone, without even the aid of visual confirmation, will tell us that they are not clean now!
They need to be soaked in hot soapy bleachy water and then scrutinized with the help of this lamp (my eyes are getting a little less sharp these days, you know?), and then run through a high-temp wash in the dishwasher (lower rack). This is the quality-control function that I perform for the Chief, whether he likes it or not!
Then I left and he bottled. No pics of that either.
Now, in the course of making beer, something called “spent grain” is produced. And in the past I have made bread using this grain, which I believe contains plenty of nutrition, because it hasn't been cooked all that long to make the beer. I don't know that much about it, but I'm always up for making interesting bread.
I will tell you all about that in the next post!

My husband and BIL have been homebrewing lately and I generally bake our bread, so I'm eagerly awaiting the information about using the spent grains. We just composted ours, which is much less useful.

Good job on the hair! That was very brave. I might be getting there soon myself, if I can't talk my husband into doing it. Only have my son here, and I am NOT setting a 16 year old boy loose with scissors. (I'm also not going to pay someone $20+ for 5 minutes of haircutting.) How did you get started in home brewing? Is it as good as or better than a nice store-bought variety? Also looking forward to reading about the bread; I bake ours too.

I cut my own too. Did let Violinist colour it, ONCE. I thought he would be safe, being a musician and all. NEVER. AGAIN.

Um…can you come cut MY hair?! ;-)Thanks for your comment on my "bus driver" post (can you believe that?!)…and I'm with you; I can NOT pass up a houseware. I seriously attribute my lapse in reasoning to aforementioned purse problems. Chances are…I'll head back this weekend and buy the $5 pitcher. ;-)I just love your blog! And you brew your own beer?! Swoon…- Laura

Your hair looks great! I've cut my own before too and it didn't turn out too bad ( I trim my own bangs regularly).

If you don't mind how you band look on the underside of you finger you can have it cut and they will insert a "shank" piece to make it a little larger, you need a jewler who actually knows whats hes doing, anyone that advertises custom designed jewlery should be able to do it, it won't look pretty on the underside of your finger but you will be able to wear it.

Hi Leila,I'm just working (nope, ummm, what's the word? Loving, learning, relaxing) my way through your archive- thank you so much for all this peace and wisdom and inspiration! I'm Sue, (just getting getting started at wanderingsue.wordpress.com) and thought I ought to properly introduce myself- don't really understand this blog world's social rules yet! I'm an ex-Massachusetts child, but moved to Australia when I was 13, and now live just south of London. I'm a desperate wannabe crafter, and all things good. I have a 21-month-old and a wonderful husband and a little flat and garden, and am trying so hard not to feel like my life is on hold until… Until we have space and I can leave my sewing machine set up, until I can have chickens, until Henry is ready for home schooling (although I think we've already started as I mean to go on!)Ahhhh, lovely husband Dave just came home from a nice Sunday morning walk with Henry asleep in the pushchair, and brought me a gluten-free brownie. Life is good. Take care,SueOh, and my wedding ring is also a bit small, and is a lovely braided band with different colours of gold- hard to disguise an extension. I've been thinking of making the extension a feature- having something added, as I also don't have an engagement ring, so no stone. Perhaps a segment which looks like a little gold rose, or something. I haven't done any research, but expect they could do that. Looking forward to finding out what you do!
