Okay, girls, I'm posting this for The Nester and her Mistreatment Club. I know I don't have to explain myself to you.
You already know that I mean to be professional and careful in my decorating choices. I really do. And then something comes up and…I just fling something up there…and secretly I like it… and so it stays there forever. Sometimes I wonder what people think when they see what I've done — (“WHAT was she thinking!!” is the most likely exclamation they stifle, I suppose).
Here is a good example. The valance is done properly, albeit minimally.
The “cover” for the hanging bare bulb is my thought after seeing a lovely punched tin lantern in a vacation house. Sort of the same, hmmm.
The “curtain” is because I need something to keep the eastern sun out of a hot summer day, and so I grabbed this little tablecloth
and, if putting such a thing up with a hammer and tack qualifies as a mistreatment, then the fact that I used thumbtacks for this —
(and please ignore that pulled out bit of hardware in the “properly done” portion of the thing…)
— and, yes, completely untreated, uncrafty, bare-naked clothespins for keeping it up —
— makes me an abuser, I think. I window abuser. A decorating abuser.
I promise a “before and after” of the completion of “phase II” of the kitchen redo… soon…

Aw, you wonderful strangers! Thanks for saying these nice things! I only posted this because I thought I'd win the prize for the most thoughtless, laziest mistreatment possible, and here you all love naked clothespins! What affirmation. Let me have another mojito!

Mama, your kitchen is clearly lovely, especially in this picture. I'm not sure why you'd say otherwise. Also, I can't help but notice how beautifully your cabinets are painted. You must have had a real clever girl paint them.
Leila says
Rosie, not only did a very clever girl paint the cabinets (and another very clever girl painted the walls), but a clever girl found the colander/light cover at the recycling center! For free!Let's remember who did thumbtacks and clothespins, though! :)I'm so lucky to have clever girls do the painting and the finding…but that's another post!

I'm thinking of doing my kitchen this way, with the yellow and the plates. Do you have a picture of the whole thing that's larger somewhere on your blog? This looks great! I'm inspired. =)
Leila says
Ellen, stay tuned 🙂
Josh & Katie says
I really like your mistreatment! I especially love the 'bare' clothespins! It look so fancy!
Margo says
Really, I think it looks good. I adore gingham. And I think I must have seen this and that's why I thought it would be a brilliant idea to pinch my laundry curtains back with clothespins. Now if your curtain was crooked or had stringy unhemmed edges. . . than I think you should apologize 🙂

The thumb tacks holding the cloth over the window are my favorite part.
